Boot problem

Can anyone help please?

When I switch on my machine it boots to the first three or four lines of the
POST, then freezes. The last readable line is 'Checking NVRAM'
I then press the reset button, and it boots normally.

This looks suspiciously like a BIOS problem, or could it be my video card or
it's driver?

I use Win2000, a Gigabyte motherboard with VIA chipset and AMII BIOS.

Thanks in advance.

First

1. Go to your Bios and then choose "Fail Safe" setting.

If that failed

2. Try "Optimized Mode."

If that failed.

3. Reset your motherboard. There is a jumper, usually a the nearest the
motherboard battery (often button battery). Change the jumper position for
about 5 sec and then put it again the way it orignally were.

3 See if there is any update for your video card or your motherboard. It
might be the case of older card to newer motherboard or vice versa.

If that failed.

4. You NVRAM may have been corrupted or is running out of battery.
The NVRAM chip can become corrupted for a variety of reasons, most commonly,
failure of the embedded battery. The battery embedded in the NVRAM chip
keeps the clock running when the machine is off and also maintains important
system configuration information. You may try to replace your NVRAM first to
verify if this is the case
