Windows 2000 uses Boot.ini as well.

It is the same. If you want to monkey with it, you may have to unprotect
it by going into a DOS box (CMD) and executing: attrib -r -h -s boot.ini
.. Note that the entire function of boot.ini is to tell ntldr where to
find the operating system, ntoskrnl.exe. Usually this is in
\WINNT\SYSSTEM32 . Boot.ini tells the controller, disk, partition where
there is a files system that that name can be looked up in.

You can play it safe by formatting a floppy with Win2K (XP, NT...) (NOT
DOS!). copy boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr to the floppy. Boot from
that floppy and it will use the boot.ini on the floppy. So you can edit it
without breaking your system.
