boot.ini troubles

I'm getting the missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe error that is mentioned
frequently in this and the update NG. I was in the middle of an update but
I don't think it was SP4 but one of the security updates. I say think
because this was one of those automatic updates and I beleive it had
completed the SP4 step and had already booted successfully.

At this point I am thinking it is something wrong with the boot.ini although
I wonder how it changed. I say that because I have both IDE & SCSI. Anyway
the config is Pri-Master=Harddrive 0, Pri-Slave=DVD, Sec-Master=Harddrive 1,
Sec-Slave=Zip. The SCSI board has 2 devices CD-RW & Scanner (no harddrive).
My boot.ini default is:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

Should it be scsi(x) instead of multi(x)? I have run chkdsk & also entered
the repair console using the win2k CD and replaced the ntoskrnl.exe with
several version and now I am back to the original.

Play with the numbers in "partition(x)", i.e. make it 2 or 3.
You must change this number in lines 3 & 5 at the same time.

Thanks Pegasus, I have tried this with no luck, I get a different error.
Both hard drives only have 1 partition. I have also booted with a dos disk
& checked partition info with fdisk. This all looks OK.

Post your boot.ini here. Is Win2000 installed on a FAT32 or
NTFS partition?

The file looks OK but I'm getting confused. You say that
Win2000 resides on an NTFS partition, and that you
checked the partition with fdisk.exe. This tool cannot
process NTFS partitions - it simply reports their presence
or absence! And how did you modify c:\boot.ini when
you changed the partition numbers?

At this stage I would boot the machine with your Win2000
CD, select "Repair" when prompted, then select "Repair
Boot Environment".

Furthermore, when you boot into the Command Console,
you could try "fixboot" and/or "fixmbr". I have not tried
either of those.

I used a dos boot diskette and ran fdisk to see if the partition was intact.
I ran the repair option on the setup disk, did nothing the first attempt but
the second time it replaced a bunch of system files and then it
booted....THANKS!!
