>BOOT.INI ON THE WRONG HDD<

W

Wayne B.

I have a situation that I've never run into before,
hopefully someone out there can learn me a thing or two.

Just recently I installed Win2k onto a system that had 98
running on it. There are two separate HDs.(both are
Western Digital) I blew away the HD that did NOT have 98
loaded on it and installed 2k and split it up into 3
partitions.(D,E and F) E and F are used specifically for
storage only. So now the PC has both OS's loaded onto it,
one on each HD. It's been running fine with no problems.

I now want to take the 98 loaded HD out to use in
another PC. I took the 98 HD out, took the jumper off
of the 2k HD (that's the setting for a single drive) and
tried to boot it up again and all it tells me is
to >hit a key to reboot<

I have come to find out that the boot.ini file is located
on the drive that has 98. In Disk Management,
it shows Disk 0 is the (system) disk, which is drive
(C) - This is the one that I have set as master. It
also shows that Disk 1 is the (boot) disk, which is
drive (D) - and ofcourse this drive is set as slave.

As of right now, I can't boot up the system to Win2k
without having the 98 HD installed as well. This is
because it holds the boot.ini file. I've
dual booted systems before but have not run into
something like this before. So this brings me to my
questions.

(1) What did I do in the first place to make this
happen? (refering to the boot.ini on other drive) I
installed Win2k on partition D of the second HD. (2)The
other question is, will I have to reinstall Win2k
onto the (D) partition in order for it to boot up
without the help of the 98HD OR is there a way to
transfer (or whatever) the boot.ini file to the HD that
has Win2k installed on it, SO I would not have to go thru
the process of reinstalling the OS.

Any constructive and informative advice is MORE than
welcome. THANX N ADVANCE The Rookie/Wayne B.

Basically you create a file in eg notepad and save as boot.ini in yr sys
root
If you check the MS kb you can find examples of a boot.ini
Assuming you had a dual boot sys and can access the origonal boot.ini, save
the boot.ini to disk/floppy and edit it replacing the 98 part with yr new
win2k eg
-----------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

Hi DL. My boot.ini is set exactly like this,------->
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft
Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect <------ Now,what I did was
copy and pasted it to the root of (D). I disconnected
(C) and restarted it. I got the 'hit a key to reboot'
message again. I did not alter the file at all, thinking
that I should leave it as is because it is pointing to
the correct place (I believe) the problem is that it
needs to be relocated on the partition that holds Win2k
as you stated. What part did I get wrong so I can
correct it. Thanks Again. Wayne B.

ALSO,.......... In Disk Management, the (C) drive is the
one stating (system) and the (D) partition is stating
(boot) Would that have anything to do with it not
recognizing the OS once I took out the drive that has 98
on it. 98 resides on the (C) drive. Wayne B.

Copy ntdetect.com, ntldr, and boot.ini onto the same partition. Replace
rdisk(1) with rdisk(0). Boot off W2k CD into RecoveryConsole and run 'map'
and 'fixboot'.
