boot.ini editing

S

Steven Wabik

i need help editing the boot.ini file. i know how to do it and all, i just
wanna know how to add this one application to it so that it can load without
windows and run properly. i am a college student, and i was wondering if i
could add MS word to to the boot.ini file and get it to run properly. i
don't want to have to boot windows to use it.

-------------------------------

here is how my boot.ini file looks like:

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Media
Center Edition 2005" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Media
Center Edition 2005 (safe mode)" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
/safeboot:minimal
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

------------------------------------------------------------------------

i wanna add me word to it. i think the entry should look some thing like
this:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\word.exe="Microsoft Word 2003"

but i think it might need a command after it so that the mouse and ketbourd
drivers will load with it and stuff. i'm thinking it might need a comand
after it because windows has the commands "/noexecute=optin /fastdetect"
after it. can someone please help me with this.

Use Wordstar or some other DOS-based application,
preferably made before 1985.

well, i did get some windows applications to start from the boot.ini file
without booting windows but most of them needed a CD to boot anyways. i only
got three programs to be able to work like that. oh well, i guess word is
not one of them.

Wordstar is a very early word processor that was
extremely popular for a few years. It would be ideal
for you because it runs under DOS.

Yes, but in a round about way.
Start by installing DOS 6.X, then install Win98, (this allows you to
drop into a real dos environment), then Install XP.

The dual boot offers Win98 and XP, enter Win98, which has msdos.sys
set to display a menu from which you select DOS.

There are other ways, but that's what I'm used to

FWIW I tried to delete my previous message, it didn't work.

You have two choices boot from a 6.X dos floppy disk
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm (with NTFS4DOS if you need to
read NTFS) - this can be done with a USB pen drive instead of a
floppy.

Or DOSbox http://tinyurl.com/gmtae

Can't find wordstar but did come across word perfect for DOS.

You real should think of booting DOS 6 off of a Pen drive
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/20306.html
Download the file and format the Pen Drive with it, point it to your
DOS floppy for an OS.

Boot.ini is for telling the operating system where its boot files are
located. It cannot be used to start applications.

By having MS-DOS installed on a 2 Gb (or smaller) partition *before*
installing Windows in a dual-boot configuration.
