Boot error

My laptop was working fine yesterday. Today I turn it on and it sits for
about three minutes on the windows xp page then goes to the user acct. page
but the pointer willnot turn into the hand to clik on the user acct.

Any Ideas what I can do

try hitting f8 before windows starts and choose "use last settings known to
work"

Thank you, I just tried that and now after the windows XP screen the screen
went blank and nothing else is happening.??

I also tried to boot in safe mode and the screen went blank with safe mode in
all four corners and it says what the operating system is accross the top but
it would not go any farther.

Now the screen says

The last two line just flash on and off. and the screen does not change.

Any help is appreciated.
