I am trying to create a boot disk for my recently installed XP operating system. Support microsft. com instructs one to create a floppy and copy Boot.ini, NTDLR and Ntdetect.com. After much searching to find these files and copying them
I learned, from this same website, that this disk won't work with NTFS which is what I have

Similalry, I created emergency disks through Norton System Works and then found out that being DOS based utilitie
it won't support my NTFS formatted system

I then was about to make disks for Automated Sytem Recovery but found out, same website, that ASR is not supported in Windows XP Home Edition

Anyone out there know a way I can create a boot disk (or any other means) to guard against being unable to start Windows XP

Any help would be gretalt appreciated

First, your XP CDROM is bootable and hasa few repair tools on it via
somehting called the recovery console. See the following links about the
recovery console:

http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxprcons.htm

http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy33.htm (near bottom)

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm

A better solution is to use "Bart's PE Builder" (free) to construct a
bootable CD with a lot of repair tools, and far fewer restrictions that the
XP CDROM. Bart's takes a while to make, but it is worth it! See the
following link for Bart's Builder:

At some point in the process you may need to "slip-stream" SP-1 into the
file sform the XP CDROM. If so, see the following link:

I have used this product in the past on Win2k machines and it worked fine.
Never tried it on a WinXP machine if you ever really need to recover
something from a dead/locked out machine.

A lot of money for something that should come with the OS.

Try also Bart's PE builder, or learn Linux (for use as a n XP
maintenance OS, relying on 3rd-party NTFS support) or avoid using NTFS
so that a Win9x DOS mode can still be used as maintenance OS.

a match to see if what you are standing in is water or petrol.
