Bookmarks to another page

I have hyperlinks from http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsMainPage.htm to
bookmarks on several other pages. In Internet Explorer (6.0), if I click on a
hyperlink (for example "What is the difference between psu and ppt" in the
General oceanographic questions section), it goes to the correct page but to
a random spot on the page. If I then click the back button and try it again,
it works properly the 2nd time and goes to the bookmark! This problem occurs
with most if not all of the links on the FaqsMainPage.htm. This problem does
not occur at all in Netscape 6.2 or Firefox 1.0.5. Website was developed with
Front Page 2003. I'd be grateful for any suggestions?

Make sure your bookmark is a single word with no spaces, and 8 characters or less.

Thanks for the quick reply Thomas, but that doesn't do the trick. I tried one
of the links to an existing bookmark that was shorter than 8 characters, and
with no spaces, and still the same problem (on
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsMainPage.htm click "What is Triton? . . .",
the bookmark is "Triton"). Any other suggestions?

Which is not necessary?

Your bookmarks work fine in IE6, did you fix the issue?

In my experience, neither is necessary. The bookmarks on the website I
designed for my wife's business had a number of bookmarks that contained
spaces and were over 8 letters. In fact, just going through the normal
clicking process, FP will generate bookmarks such as these by default.

I know FP will generate them based on whatever text your select. However, not all browsers/OS can
handle spaces in URLs correctly.

No, I didn't do anything, and it's not fixed. I just tried clicking "What is
Triton?. . ." on http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsMainPage.htm, which should
link to http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsGeneralInstrument.htm#Triton. Once
again, the first time it goes to the correct page but the wrong location. On
hitting the back button and trying the link again, it works correctly the
second time. I can get the sequence to repeat (i.e., it won't work on the
first try again) by clicking Tools/Internet Options and Deleting Cookies,
Deleting Files, and Clearing History.

See if the following will solve the problem:

Make all of your FAQ hyperlinks absolute URLs, example for each section below:
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsGeneralInstrument.htm#Triton
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsGeneralOceanographic.htm#PsuPpt
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsRecommendedPractices.htm#ProfilingSteps
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsService.htm#CalibrationSchedule
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsOrdering.htm#ProfilingCTDs
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsSoftware.htm#SoftwareSummary
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsDataProc.htm#911Align
http://www.seabird.com/FAQs/FAQsManufacturing.htm#PressureTest

Have you experienced that relative URLs can be the issue? Changing to
absolute ULRs won't work for our website. The reason: we also distribute a
copy of the website on CD-ROM for our customers (oceanographic research
institutions) to take to sea with them, where they usually don't have
internet access. I need to have links work on the CD-ROM version as well as
on the 'live' version (I am aware that other features, such as the Search
page, don't work on the CD-ROM, but I've taken great pains to ensure that
links work). If there is no other solution, I guess I'll have to live with
this quirky behavior.

Actually, I have never noticed this issue in IE 6, as I try to not use bookmarks, especially for FAQ
pages, because the entire page is always displayed, as well as all of the hyperlink shown as
visited, if you have the default link colors set or have specified different colors, etc.

This was just a shot in the dark, which if used on the web would not cause any problems if it didn't
work, but on a CD it would not work.

You may be right. I have not run into this problem with IE, Opera, or
Netscape.
