Blue screen "Setup is being restarted..." loop when upgrading to WindowsXP Professional from NT

I keep getting a setup error that is restarting my computer. It just
keeps looping. When I start my computer in safe mode I get a bunch of
lines with different lines of exe. The last one being:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Winnt\system32\drivers\mup...
then it restarts again. Can anyone help me?

I am running a compaq 3100 with AMD "64" processor. Laptop is only three
months old so have the latest bells and whistles. I am experiencing that
exact same thing after a install of sp2. a reboot loop.. can get into safe
mode but when try to start xp normally goes into the reboot loop. I am
reverting myhard drive now with "go back" ... Any ideas what could have
happened or how to stop it if it happens again???
 
My PC is in the exact same state as NDW below...Did anyone find a way to at
least get safe mode working???
