blue screen/reboot

System is an XP -SP2 Home Edition. Starting to go into reboot from Welcome
screen when an identity is clicked on. Doesn't matter which identity is
chosen. There is a quick blue screen error flash followed by a reboot. Then
the MS window that states system has just recovered from a critical error
caused by an unknown driver. This happens maybe once or twice a day. Blue
screen is not on long enough to read and has only happened to me once.
Mostly happens when my wife is logging on. Only new device is a Buffalo
LinkStation Network HD but that was installed over a month ago. This problem
is a about a week old. Any ideas? Thank you, Steve T.

To get the Stop Error numbers (blue screen), disable the automatic
reboot on failure:

System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery>Settings and under System Failure
uncheck "Automatically Restart".

Then you can research the Stop Error here:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

Also, check the Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

Hi Steve,

I actually had the same problem happen to me last week. I fixed it by
taking the hard drive out of the PC I was having problems with and hooking it
up in another PC, with Windows XP on it, as a slave and then running chkdsk
on it. It fixed the problem however, I did have to reinstall some
applications to get them working again. If you have a recovery disk you might
try using the recovery console and running chkdsk or just reinstalling
Windows system files. I have no idea as of yet what happened to my PC as I
had not installed any new software or hardware. So far it has been working
fine with no problems at all.

:

In general recovery disks don't have the recovery console option. That
is entered by booting from the XP installation CD.

So far......everything works OK. I had another blue screen crash and even
though I had unchecked the box to automatically reboot, it did. I went to
event viewer immediately and found system error 1003, I think. I had a
feeling that it referred to my USB SanDisk ImageMate 12-in-i card reader.
Went to SanDisk website and found the error code for the above reader and
re-installed the driver. Like I said, so far so good. Thanks for the
responses, Steve T.
