Blue Screen on start up

Shane Garrison

I keep getting a Windows XP Blue Screen on start up with the message "??
Program not found - skipping autocheck" and "???????? Program not found -
Skipping Autocheck" without quotation marks. What does this mean and how do I
get rid of this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You need to resolve the problem highlighted by the Error Report.

Does the computer boot to the Desktop? If not try safe mode.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?
A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/en-us

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

The computer starts fine after that blue screen message. I finally figured
out the problem. In the registry under HKLM\SYSTEM\Current Control
Set\Control\Session Manager, there is a value named BootExecute the value
data for this had autocheck and two japanese characters then autocheck again
with 8 japanese characters. I think the japanese characters were where I was
getting the ?? and the ???????? from. Anyway I deleted the value data, after
backing it up of course, and restarted the computer with no more blue screen
error messages. I don't know what put the info into the registry to begin
with but I took it out and everything is working fine. Thankyou for you help
and input on my problem.

That's a strange one. Is there a reason why you might encounter Japanese
characters on your computer. If I saw such characters here I would suspect
malware activity.

I suspect something like that to. Not really sure if they were Japanese or
Chinese but that's what they looked like to me. Anyway, I got the problem
fixed and haven't had any more problems like that since. Thanks for you input
