Blue Folders in Windows Explorer

E

Ed

Can anyone explain to me what the blue folders are in the
C:\Windows folder?

Each of these is named "$NtUninstall" followed by what
looks like Knowledgebase 'Q' numbers. Each has a subfolder
named "spuninst" which contains spuninst.exe and setup.inf.

I have a couple of guesses but would rather know for sure.

Do I answer the question you asked or the one you mean? Can't decide.

Blue means Compressed (this is file system compression not Compressed folders aka zip files). Green means Encrypted

The folders names are those of updates from MS

Thanks, David.

I had no idea 'Blue' meant compressed and I don't have
a 'Green' folder anywhere! At least not that I can find.

I guessed they had something to do with updates. Am I also
correctly guessing that if I click on the "spuninst.exe"
file it will uninstall that particular update?

Probably not. There is command line parameters required as well. But they'll be in Add/Remove Programs.

Files can be compressed, nothing, or encrypted. Some reserve files automatically are compressed but no files are automatically encrypted.

Encryption is for when you expect the hardware to be stolen (and you care about your data not being read)..

Hi Ed,

Basically yes. Those folders are there for uninstalling the hotfixes. If you
don't want to uninstall the hotfix (and most don't unless they are
experiencing trouble with it), then simply delete the folder. Afterwards.
when you go to add & remove in the control panel and select the associated
hotfix, you will get an error message followed by a prompt to remove it from
the listings.
