Blog With FrontPage2003?

B

Brian D

Hi,
I have used the various versions of FrontPage for several years on my first
website and now want to create a website that has a Blog as a major
component. I purchased a domain name and space want to control the layout
and have only ads that make me money so I don't want to use the freeblogging
sites.
Does anyone have any thoughts on using FrontPage 2003 as my Blog software!
If not FrontPage what software would you recommend to use to create the Blog
commponent of my website? Any recommendations for books or tutorials?
Thanks.
Brian

You can create a site that appears to the visitor more or less like a blog
in FrontPage but there is no real FP blogging options that I know of.

FWIW, I use WordPress http://wordpress.org for my blog
(http://mvp.wiserways.com/blog but I'm not very diligent about updating it)
I'd recommend putting it in a subsite of your FP web. You can customize it
to blend in with your site if you chose but blogs once set up are pretty
much independent of your web editor, everything in a good blogging
application is done through the browser.

I have been thinking about putting a blog in my site. In fact I have a page
named Trevor's Blog but the only content is an Under Construction notice.

My query is do a need a subweb. My (ISP provided and free) website does not
have FP Extensions, and I understand subwebs need these

Presumably if I find a blog site to use, I can just link to it with a
hyperlink
e.g. <a href="http://my.blogsite.com target="_top">My Blogsite Name</a>

You don't need to use the FPSE to have a subweb. A subweb as FP uses it is
just a separately managed web. If you host uses subdomains (that's the
proper term for a url that looks like blog.site.com and is normally what a
web host means when they say subdomain) then you can simply create a new
local web in FrontPage for you blog if you decide to host one yourself using
WordPress or some other blogging engine.

Otherwise is you use something like blogger.com you can just link to it from
your site menu.

You can use the blogger.com software, publish it (requires FTP access)
on your own site instead of theirs, and put any ads you want on the
pages.

See http://blog.psychlinks.ca as an example. The main site is maintained
by FrontPage on a Linux server (with FP extensions) but uses blogger.com
for the blog and phpBB for the forum at http://forum.psychlinks.ca -- it
all seems to co-exist quite happily.

You can not create a subweb on a site that doesn't have the FP extensions. A subdomain is just a DSN
pointer, and when used, it is best use with a FP subweb.
