Blocking websites

I'm trying to block myspace.com from my daughter. I've tried entering the
entire website in to the restricted zone on IPs several times. It still
allows me in. I must be missing something???

You're going to have a helluva tough time blocking that from her if she is
determined not to cooperate with you on that policy, but here is a first
step:

Open the hosts file in the \Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc folder with
Notepad. You'll see a bunch of commented lines beginning with #. The first
real entry is 127.0.0.1 localhost. You'll type the following text on the
line below that:

0.0.0.0 www.myspace.com

Of course, if your daughter were determined to get around your block, all
she would have to do is post a question here and I would give her the IP
address of myspace.com with instructions on how to access the site directly.
I'm sure she could get this information from friends at school.

You can use something like NetNanny and/or as Vagabond Software
suggested edit the HOSTS file, but there is no technological substitute
for human supervision and consequences for unallowed actions of
children. I'm sure you know that, not meant as a criticism, just that so
many people seem to think that technology is a panacea and cure for
everything and it's just not so.

Yes, you are missing something. Let your daughter use myspace.com

You could use Content Advisor in Internet Explorer. Enable it and in the
approved sites tab enter the URL that you wish to block and click never.

Dear Tammy,

As a concerned parent I am writing to inform you that their are several ways
to block unwanted or undesired websites. A great one is by using the limited
used account approach so that any system changes are done only by the
administrator of the computer who has a password only the admin knows. The
user (your daughter has a limited account not an admin account) Instructions
to do this first critical step are on the Windows Security Website.

Once that is done there are many website filtering programs out there. The
important thing to remember is to make sure that the software works on the
limited user approach, which means only the computer administrator can change
the settings of the software. XP Home has few options in the OS for system
wide user settings but XP Pro has many. Polices can be created in XP Pro
that not only block ports & ip's but also blocks software from being run by
each user, ie you can use it but not your daughter.

Another approach is to install & use a good router that includes ip and port
blocking. I also suggest one that includes web access time limiting :)

This is a good time for you to reseach all of the above, to make the calls,
and be informed. I suggest you do so with urgency. Myspace is full of
creatures of the night who hunt for prey online. I also suggest you make
sure that all of her IM's are logged to have proof when something goes bad.
Teenagers may want privacy, but as parents we need to protect them first and
foremost.
