blocking spyware

I am having trouble with spyware on my computer. I've been using ad aware.
Yesterday, I updated ad aware, then ran it. I quaranteened all the entries.
Then I ran ad aware again. Nothing was found on the second scan. Then, while
the ad aware program was still up, I clicked the link to their site. I then
immediately closed IE, so I was on THEIR site for a second at most. I then
ran ad aware again and guess what...48 more instances of spyware.

What the heck is going on?

I will agree with the other answer. Spybot, Search and Destroy is a better
tool; however, I have a friend who has and runs both.
