In XP if someone was spamming a newsgroup I could click on the message and
select block user so posts from them would never appear again. How do I do
this in Windows mail?

Right-click on the message, select Junk E-mail - Add Sender to blocked
senders list
That only stops them until they change their fake email address.
And it doesn't remove messages already downloaded.

I get that option for email but not Usenet.

I just found out I have to go to Message in the top menu and then I can
select Junk E-Mail for Usenet. It is not available as a right click context
menu item though like it is in my email.

1. Junk E-mail is for email. Muffin is writing about newsgroups.

2. In Tools/Message Rules/News the filter:
a. is counter-intuitive
b. doesn't work

First, you should be able to apply the same rules to all the newsgroups.
The way they have that set up, you would have to go through every newsgroup
and fill out the form. If you are really, really smart, you will hit the
Apply... tab and you will select the news folder which should then check the
sub-folders box. Now you could go look and see which folder that applied to
and in checking each rule you will find that it only shows the first
sub-folder in the newsgroup. Then you go to work the newsgroups and you
will probably find, as I did, that the Message Rules still don't filter out
the junk.

Now, maybe I'm doing something wrong. But after you have gone through the
Message Rules exercise, there ought to be a decent way to see the newsgroups
the rules were applied to, the filters and appropriate distributions. Now
you don't know that you failed until you see the junk in your newsgroups.
Yes, it needs some redesign and patching, in my view. There are other
products, including Outlook, that did it better.

In the meantime, it would be nice to see a procedure to set up rules for all
the newsgroups that would work.

Thank you for that solution! I had set up message rules in news but it never
removed the messages until I used the message rules - select all - to clean
out the blocked messages, which defeated the purpose of not seeing the
messages at all.

Sorry, I'm using WLM, and one of the improvements is the right-click on a
news post... I forgot to check WM, to see if it worked the same way.

In WM, you have to click on Message, Junk E-mail , Add sender...

and it does work in newsgroups, as well as email.

The block senders works for newsgroups, as well as mail.

AFAIK, the rules apply to all groups, as long as you don't check the top
condition.
