Windows Mail(News)

Some of the big faults of WinXP OE were the poor facility
to block messages and posters and specific newsgroup
sources, also the absence of the ability to edit out offending
or irritating newsgroups from the List of Newsgroups.
I see MS has decided to make it just a little harder to a
beginner to work out how to access newsgroups by using
a name similar to Windows Mail.
(I will stick to Eudora for the time being, untroubled it
has gone to Open Source)
Almost nothing has changed for the better. Blocking a post
by deleting it's contents may work better (maybe) but the
poster's header still appears, and often it can be as offensive
as the contents in some groups.
None of the options I mention have been touched.
I see that "My Computer" is now "Computer". Who thought of
that and how much money does he get?
Unfortunately there is yet no other program which I have used
that is ready to replace Windows Mail (News). Probably
because so few of the Windows users actually access newsgroups.

Thanks for telling us that eudora is going to opensource.

Ok. The opening statement for Windows Users is what
struck me.
"Qualcomm ceased sales of Eudora on May 1st.

The Paid mode commercial versions of Eudora are no longer available as
of May 1st, 2007. The Sponsored mode versions of Eudora continue to be
available for download. An open source version of Eudora® is being developed
by Mozilla and will be free of charge."
I had a "Paid mode" version 6.+ but it wouldn't allow itself to become
a default
mail program or Vista wouldn't have it,
so I had to download the 7.+ version.
I assume the commercial venture has gone the way of all that deviated
from
MS.

Actually, the commercial version has gone the way of all that don't
sell.

While Eudora has a fan base of users who seem pretty happy with it, it
was never very popular and users have a bunch of free applications to
chose from such as Thunderbird, Pegasus (which I prefer) and, of
course, OE included with Windows and Outlook included with Office. A
very large number of people are using Outlook because it's used by
their employer. Then there's built in mail clients in AOL, Juno,
NetZero, etc. It's a crowded field.

As to your comment "deviated from MS" that's pretty ridiculous in view
of the increasing popularity of Thunderbird, et. al.

To me, Eudora never seemed to offer anything worth the price of the
purchased version and the free version lives on as does the adware
version and soon the open source version, Penelope, MAY get here. I
say MAY because it appears there's no rush to make it available,
progress seems to be very close to zero.....
