bloatware complaint about psc 2510, psc 2210, psc 2410

HP's drivers for the PSC models have become hugely bloated, full of
functions the users will never use and worst of all can't be
downloaded.

The PSC2210 with the wireless option is probably the one that tops
all. Installation takes forever even with a USB connection to the
printer and gives you almost no feel for how much time remains before
installation is complete. And forget about installing the drivers
over a wireless connection. That took over an hour. And as far as
automatic driver download via a WindowsXP network connection, it is
obvious that HP is not following Microsoft's lead when it comes to
making it easy.

I wish HP would understand that customers and especially tech support
people like myself just want something that is simple and easy to use.

Thank goodness that the old DeskJet 550C driver satisifes 98% of a
customer's printing needs.

If someone from HP monitors these forums, please take these thoughts
back to the designers. Remember KISS is almost always the best plan.

Thanks. I have been needing to say this for a long time now.

The new version 3.5 drivers have a "basic functionality" option that provides
print and scan functionality without the extra "stuff". Available for download
from:

The full download is also available.

I have a couple of PCs here connected to a PSC2510 via wireless, I dont
understand why it would take you that long to set up the printer over a
wireless connection, it took me no longer than it did setting up the main PC
on it via USB.

That depends on what those customers want. A great many PC users are
nowhere near a PC literate as those of us who inhabit these newsgroups and
the PSC range (and similar) help make some of the tasks power users consider
a doddle, easy for even mere mortals. Hell, even my parents can use a great
deal of the abilities on their PSC2175 without having to phone me up for
instructions.

I guess "simple" is a relative term, I know they arent perfect, but there
are different levels of functionality such as: simple, idiot proof, idiot
friendly, and flexible. I think in this case HP may have made the decision
to go for "idiot friendly", and if that makes my life easy (Im calling
myself an idiot here - loadsa ammo for you) then im happy

49M for the BASIC drivers (networking NOT supported)! 426M for the full
drivers!!!!

I hate all the garbage drivers loaded into memory sucking up CPU and
RAM.

Is there any way to find out what is new/fixed in the latest driver?

Printer drivers do not "suck up CPU and RAM". They consume disk
space, nothing more. They are a translation layer for documents when sent
to the printer. Your print spool actually consumes more RAM and CPU than
the drivers at document conversion time.

and RAM.

Possibly you have a number of programs loading when Windows starts. I
suppose some of them may have come with the printer. Try
configuration options in your installed programs first. This may take
some digging. If necessary use msconfig.exe Start --> Run --> type
"msconfig" in the box --> unclick startup programs Keep programs such
as ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor, System Tray, LoadPowerProfile,
Scheduling Agent, StateMgr if they are enabled. Stay on the safe side
and don't make a change if unsure. Use of msconfig should be a last
resort.

I just setup a hp psc 1350 all-in-one. The recommended available disk
space for Windows XP was 1.2 Gb. Oink. Oink.
