Blasts of sound

Here's one to challenge you. I have recently had some very strange
happenings when I click on a website (not necessarily the same one) which
then gives rise to loud squawking from my loudspeakers which stops if I
close the page down. As I had had some minor trouble with stuttering sound,
as well as the squawks, I bought some new speakers, which eliminated the
stutter and other sundry noises during playback. However, the squawks
continue randomly on some occasions when I click on the Google toolbar, I
think. The actual sound is best described as loud, irregular white noise,
and as far as I know, it will go on indefinitely once started. I can't
reproduce it to order, and so far, it has happened just three times on
different sites each time. I haven't restored, as I don't like to do so
unless I have at least some idea of what the problem was.

I do weekly full scans in Norton, I have Zone Alarm, and the XP firewall,
plus my ISP's firewall. I know this sounds like overkill, but Zone Alarm
completely blocks some pages or stops graphics, so I have to switch it off
from time to time, which makes me nervous.

My mobo is an MSI K7T266 Pro2 with AC 97 Realtek onboard sound.

I can't think of any possible connection between a mouse click and this
sound. There is no sound on the web pages concerned, the latest of which
was the Royal Horticultural Society, which I think we can assume is unlikely
to distribute viruses or the like.

Any ideas please, guys?

Hi

The Google pop-up blocker, by default, 'plays a sound' when blocking a web
site. Have you checked those options and turned that 'sound' off to see if
it helps?

Blasts, squawks, stuttering and white noise from the Royal Horticultural
Society. I bet you are a *barrel* of fun at parties...

(please forgive I plead temporary insanity and throw myself at the mercy of
the Society :-)
All in good fun... and now for something completely different....

Open Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel. Go to the sounds tab. Click
"Save as" and give your current sound scheme a memorable name. (party
animal?) Then from the Sound scheme drop down menu select "No Sounds." Click
apply and/or OK.

If the problems cease you know that what you're hearing is an assigned
"Windows Event" sound. You should be able to go through the list of sounds
one by one and reassign or eliminate the ones that are giving you a
headache. If the sounds continue you know that they are the result of some
other problem and can begin troubleshooting from there. (suspect a
hardware/driver conflict.)

I have been having this very same problem, sometimes when clicking on a link
my speakers will start squaking which stops whenever I close IE. I also
have an MSI motherboard with AC 97 Realtek onboard sound and the Google
toolbar although I don't use the pop up blocker. This problem only started
quite recently and seems not as frequent now after I ran Chkdsk which found
& fixed some errors on my hard drive.

That's an interesting thought. I've been a bit paranoid about chkdsk ever
since it got into a loop while installing XP for the first time some years
ago, and checked the disk for over two hours, finding less each time. I'm
sure it is better now, so I'll try it if any more squawks happen. I've
disabled the popup click now and will have to await events before I do
anything else.
