Blank Screen

My Compaq computer does not display anything on the screen. The screen
remains blank, but I know the monitor is working correctly. I tried using a
bootable disk, but the computer did not boot from the disk. The computer does
not do anything at all. What should I do?

Did yuo get any response from the computer when using boot disk?
Anything flash up on screen?
Did it make noise like it was reading disk in floppy drive?
Is it set to boot from floppy drive?

I used my Windows XP CD as my boot disk. The computer is set to read from the
DVD drive, the drive I put the CD in. The computer kept reading the CD, but
nothing happened. Nothing appeared on the screen at all. The Compaq logo did
not show.

You already connected your monitor to another computer?
Monitor worked.

So you can see BIOS to set computer to DVD?
There is a visual there?

Is your video onboard or a PCI card?

The computer always read from the DVD first when a disc was inserted and the
computer was booted. I do not know if the video is onboard or a PCI card. I
doubt that anything is wrong with the video card because this problem only
occurred after I got a BSoD on that Compaq laptop.

This is a laptop??

How do yuo know the "monitor" is good? you have no visual?

Does the laptop have a video connection where you could connect an external
"Monitor"?

XP won't boot to the CD unless you "Press Any Key to boot to the cd..."

You say this is a laptop. Do you get anything on the laptop display (not
the attached monitor). If not, you should have a Function button on your
laptop that will switch the display from the laptop LCD to an external
monitor, etc. Try pressing this key combo to cycle the display. If still
nothing, the LCD or motherboard may have gone bad in your laptop. I'd give
your laptop manufacturer a call and they could help you further with that.

And if you already hooked up your monitor to another computer and it worked,
you know it's not your monitor.

Yes, it is a Compaq Presario 2701US. I tried an external monitor and the
screen was still blank so I know the laptop's monitor is working.

Did you read "Techdango" response? Is there a key stroke combination to
enable a external monitor?

I know that the external monitor is receiving the signal from the laptop. I
tried pressing keys, but nothing displays on the screen at all. There is
absolutely nothing on the screen, but it powers on. It does not boot from the
hard drive or anything. When I insert a bootable CD, it sounds like if it is
reading the CD but does not boot from the CD. The LCD is fine. Is there
anything that I can do to make the computer boot from the CD or at least the
hard drive? The computer powers on, but does nothing.

How could the motherboard go bad in the laptop? Is there anyway to fix a
motherboard problem? Does BIOS have anything to do with the computer not
being able to do basic things like booting from a disc or reading from the
hard drive?

You can ty and remove cmos battery or use jumper reset bios.
if that doesn't bring up the bios screen, it a good cahnce this laptop is at
its end of life.

MB fo laptop aren't as easily or economically replaced as are desktops.
if you can afford it, have repair shop declare it DOA (or not).

How do you remove the cmos battery? Where is the cmos battery? Also, how do
you jumper reset BIOS? The laptop was two years old when it stopped working a
year ago, so it should still be good.

Option 1: Remove Devices and Reset BIOS Defaults
Remove all external devices and media. Be sure to check the optical drive,
flash memory slot and the floppy drive (if avaialble).
Restart the computer by holding down the Power button for 5 seconds. Then
release the Power button and press it again briefly to turn the computer on.
When the power light turns on, press the F10 key on the keyboard to enter
the system BIOS menu.
Press the F9 key to reset the BIOS defaults. Then Press the F10 Key to save
the changes and restart the computer. Press the Enter key when prompted to
save the changes.

So far I can't find anything about a jumper or removing cmos battery. Try to
reset bios using option 1 above.

How do you remove the CMOS battery? Where is the CMOS battery?

Removing the battery will do same as resetting jumper.
Also, how do you jumper reset BIOS?

Personally, I think it's DOA. Let me know!!

It varies, sometimes by a lot. Usually 15 minutes is enough. Sometimes
ittakes an hour or more.

Just so you know, if you get video on the LCD for the laptop, most likely the
problem
is not a motherboard issue. If you were having a mb issue, you wouldn't get
anything on the LCD.

If you get video on the LCD, then you should be able to get into the BIOS
and change
the boot order.

If no video, then its either your mb, video card (assuming its not built on
the board), or
your LCD.
