Jethic

Hello,

My browser does a strange behavior, when I click on certain link the only
thing that appears is a blank page but the progress bar doesn't appear and
at the lower left corner the status of the page says: done. It also does the
same thing when I try to go to www.windowsupdate.com website. It seems like
every JavaScript button(link) does that.

Also when I do Help/About In the IE windows I don't even see the information
of my IE browser. I have IE6.0 but it doesn't show there. I though it might
be a virus but its not. I then scanned my PC with ad-aware but no spyware
found there either. I've d/l Opera browser and its working fine with that so
my problem is really JUST with IE.

If anyone has any clue what might cause this please help me!!

thx

Hi Jethic :)

Try the following and see if it helps.

Blank Pages:

Go to Start|Run and enter "regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll" (without the
quotes). After you get a Success message, re-boot. If that doesn't work,
then check out the following article and do the additional steps outlined
there:

Hope this helps.

Hi Jethic :)

You may have some parasites or malware on your system with what you
describe.
Before you go the reinstall route, which I'll give you the repair and
reinstall instructions for too, but, if you do have some bugs, it may save
you having to do that. However, before you do the reinstall, try the
repair. Often that will work clear the problem. A reinstall can be risky,
and should only be done as the last card in the deck, after checking both
sleeves as well first. So try the following before the reinstall.

Download and install, then you *MUST* update the programs prior to running
to be sure they have the latest definitions, then run the programs below.
They are free and very effective. Be sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware,
as what one does not detect the other may. It is important that you do all
the steps and follow all directions carefully:

=========================
CAUTION!!!!!
Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs below, download a
copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html (if your OS is Win2k or
XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill your internet
connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will enable you to
regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
========================
IMPORTANT!!
It is important that you run the programs in the order that they are listed
here.

RUN ALL PROGRAMS OFF LINE IN SAFE MODE AND SHOW HIDDEN FILES. THEN REBOOT
AND RUN THEM AGAIN TO BE SURE ALL FILES ARE ACCESSED, DELETING ALL ITEMS
DISPLAYED IN RED IN SPYBOT.

If the above does not work then do the following, beginning with the repair

Hi Jethic :)

Sorry I hit the send button before..... I finished...<sigh>

If the other instructions for the scumware removal does not work, please do
the following starting with the Repair for XP, and please follow all
directions carefully.

For XP Repair of IE -

Unlike the previous versions of the Windows program, the IE6 is a core part
of the XP program. A reinstall over the existing install can cause problems,
and there are specific instructions that can reduce the chance of such
problems. However, it is always much safer to do a repair instead of a
reinstall. A reinstall should only be done as the very last thing when all
else has failed. And then only according to the proper instructions.

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled, and follow all instructions
carefully

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318378

Courtesy of Robert Aldwinckle

XP users who have installed IE6sp1 before upgrading to XPsp1
will have setupwbv.dll and will be able to do a repair using

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Otherwise, they have to use

sfc /scannow

etc., or reinstall IE6 (Ref: KB318378)

or......................

Courtesy of Jim Byrd:

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the
quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.) Have your XP CD handy
and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it takes a while. This will do
the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a lot more, that is find any corrupt
system files and replace them. It does not, however, re-register the
various software components (except possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files from
certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To check for
this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter "qfecheck /v /l:c:\"
(without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck installed, it can be
obtained for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35468 and for
Win2k, obtain qfecheck here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35470

2. Another alternative that works on Win2k and may or may not work on XP
(but probably does - I've heard both stories), for just IE6 repair if you
don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it works
there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might want to give
it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run without the
quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

4. Lastly, here is a link to a MSKB article about re-installing IE6/OE6:

<TITLE>831429 - Windows XP stops responding when you download updates from

It is actually a more comprehensive set of re-registrations than an
IE Repair with the default FixIE.inf would do for either NT5.

Although they are listed specifically for W2K they should apply
equally to XP.

Additionally, the information here may be of some assistance:

Ive scanned my PC with all the program you suggested(thx BTW they are really
good) and I did find some spyware however it didnt solve the problem.

So I went on the with the sfc /scannow command in the run menu but
everytime I try I get a message telling me to insert the CD. I insert my
WinXP CD and hit retry but it says that I have a bad CD even though this is
the CD I used to install WinXP.

You know what might cause this problem?

Hi Jethic :)

Sorry to take so long to get back with you, but, as I don't have XP, I had
to get with some of those who are experienced with it and see what their
opinions were. Here are a couple of suggestions:

1. Courtesy of Doug Knox -

It primarily depends on whether they're running XP with SP1 integrated or XP
with SP1 added on.

Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

SourcePath == Should point to the CD drive. Sometimes users change
the letter and XP can't find its files
ServicePackSourcePath == Should be the same as SourcePath if SP1 was
integrated in the install, might be C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles if SP1 was
added later
ServicePackCachePath == C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\ServicePackCache if
SP1 was added later, won't exist if SP1 was integreated.

Additionally, to use SFC and the XP CD, it must be a retail CD, not a
"recovery" CD. For OEM installs, there should be a copy of the I386
folder on the hard drive. If so, the SourcePath value should point to the
drive/folder its in. Example: C:\ not C:\I386.

and ...........

2. Courtesy of Manny Carvalho

Use TweakUI to set the installation path to the drive where the CD is
located. XP is looking for the CD at that path and if the path is wrong it
issues that odd error message that you have the wrong CD.

Ok well I have an OEM CD so I copied the I386 on my HDD and changed my
SourcePath to C:/. With this it seems like its working fine although I didnt
have time to do it completely because apparently its suppose to take a while
so I will do that probably tomorrow.

I'll keep you posted if its work but Im sure it will :) thx a lot for all
your effort. Its really appreciated. BTW I rarely seen anyone with such good
post as you, can I ask you where do you take all this info? I don't know a
lot of good newsgroup and Im wondering if you could give me some of your
source if its not too much asking.

thx again

Hi Jethic :)

You're very welcome. Yes, please do let me know how it works out.

As for the info..I've been both posting questions, and helping out as I can.
Mostly, I read the other questions and answers, then I have a resource
reference that I have built from the replies and how the problems are
resolved. I check out the links that they MVP's offer in their replies and
study up on the information there too. A lot of it is trial and error on a
lot of my own problems with both IE and my OS, WinME. And believe me, I've
had plenty of problems with both too. <g> There is no one book that you can
buy that gives all the various information in a nutshell, but below are some
very good places to start for IE. Also, in whatever group you wish to
participate in, reading the questions and responses is an excellent way to
learn. All the experts and MVP's are a great source of information, and
they are always happy to help and answer questions. Just ask. ;-)

Here are some of the sources of information I and many others use as
references. I think you'll find them helpful. There are resources such as
this available in other newsgroups, so just ask and folks will be happy to
provide like information for their groups particular topic. :)

Hi Jan - In addition to Doug's procedure, if it still doesn't work for him,
your OP may also need to set the value of SourcePath in this key to point to
the same CD drive (or other path that you used in the other keys he
mentioned if it's a stored i386 folder - BTW, that path should not include
the i386 folder name, just the path up to that point, thus just the CD
drive, for example J:\ not J:\i386 and the same for a stored i386 folder,
for example, C:\XPHome\, not C:\XPHome\i386):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

IIRC, you also must re-boot after changing these keys, and I think you may
need to have Admin priveleges (although I'm not altogether sure about
remembering that last correctly).

Thank you very much for the additional information. Hopefully, it will
enable Jethic to complete the process. Thank you for also pointing that
adding the i386 would cause the path to fail and should be eliminated. :)

I truly appreciate your help and additional input.

Ok well the repair worked until the end but...its didnt fix my problem lol.

I think I know what happened, its not only IE because I realize the same
think happened when I used the start|find module. Its blank there too. Also
last week I had to uninstall Norton AntiVirus but for an unknown reason the
add/remove software wasnt working for NAV. So I deleted manually in the
registry every key where either Norton,Symantec,NAV,liveupdate was listed
and doing that I probably deleted a key that was needed for these things to
work. And I didnt do a backup of the registry before doing that(stupid me).

So unless theres a way to trace back the error I did or recovering an old
registry setting, Im afraid I will have no choice but to reinstall
WinXP.....

J

Jan Il

Hi Jethic :)

It is possible to do a Restore back to a date prior to when you deleted the
files in the Registry? If so, will give you the second chance you need to be
able to get the problem resolved. Can you do this? Check and see how far
back you can go, if at all, and let us know if it will work. I truly would
hate to see you do a reinstall if it can be avoided in any way, and only
after all else has failed. It's often risky at best.

Jan :)

J

I do this with system restore right? the thing is......that module is blank
too lol I cant use it.

Is there another way to do so?

Hi Jethic :)

I was so hoping that we could find one more way to get this done without
having to do the reinstall. But, I guess without the Restore ability, that
leaves you with not much more. Below are the instructions to properly
reinstall both IE and OE after you have reinstalled XP and then go
immediately to Windows Update and reinstall all the patches and updates

You're very welcome. Found a few minutes and surprise!...a friendly PC <g>

As for my addy, in the area of the newsgroup accounts where it asks for your

then @localhost.com. Another I use is (e-mail address removed). ;-))
