Press CTRL + ALT + DEL File New Task type "explorer.exe" and hit
enter...
Does that bring up your desktop?
If so then reboot right from there - and that's often the trick. If
not then see he

I had a similar problem -- My desktop and taskbar both disappeared. I
tried running the desktop/taskbar restore script, and it did not work.
I then re-installed XP (newer version) and that didn't help either. I
can't figure out why, with a brand new OS, this problem did not correct
itself. The original problem occured right after I upgrade my iTunes
software (big mistake), which also crashed my iPod, forcing me to
reformat it. I don't know what relationship there would be between the
two problems, but they happened simultaneously, so I'm guessing it
wasn't a coincidence. What can I do next?

Other then searching your registry for a folder called "StuckRects" and
deleting it ( Not "Stuckrects2" just "StuckRects"), I don't know.
I've seen alot of people posting in here with iTunes problems.

Yes. Both my desktop and task bar disappeared, and I cannot get them
back. I re-installed XP and this did not solve the problem.

Close all programs that you can (you can Alt + Tab to other programs) and type in Task Manager - File menu - New Task (Run) ...

cmd /k tasklist /fi "imagename eq explorer.exe"

Does this return any hits?

S Taylor told you to type explorer - did you?

Use regedit's Search function to find it, it could have multiple locations.
and if it exists, it MAY be interfering with the taskbar, but it wont be the
cause of your
desktop shell not loading.

Regedit.exe will not start. When I attempt to run this program, th
little hourglass appears for about 2 seconds, and then goes away. Sam
thing happens when I try to run explorer.exe.

Why wouldn't reinstalling XP have solved this problem? That's what
don't get.

OK, disregard the post below. Regedit started, it just took about 3
minutes for it to show up on my screen. I'm searching for the
StuckRects folder now.

Your Xp, has more problems then you thought :)
If you had/have a virus or malware present, the problem maybe ongoing.
In which case, the easiest way to fix it, would be to do a clean install of
XP.

You should check that link about a corrupt profile also.
It sounds like you're having way more problems then just a missing shell.
