Blank area after fixed and variable height objects

My report detail has four objects: a chart, two subreports, and a memo field.
The chart is at the top left with a subreport and memo field to its right.
The subreport object is slightly above the memo field, each is the same
width, and both are set to ‘Can Grow’, which they do successfully. (The
chart is a fixed length of 3â€.)

The second subreport (that should immediately follow the chart) is printing
much farther down the page than where it was designed – leaving a blank area
that happens to be exactly the same height as the sum of the ‘growth’ of the
two object to the right of the preceding chart. ACCESS appears to falsely
assume that the additional ‘growth’ of these fields must exceed the height of
the fixed-height chart object and miscalculates the new object’s starting
point. Please tell me I’m wrong and that I’ve just missed a simple format
setting.

The second subreport includes NO blank areas and is also set to ‘Can Grow’.
Just in case you’re wondering, a duplicate of this report with the second
subreport REMOVED results in correct printing of the next detail ‘row’ at the
proper location on the page (no unnecessary blank space).

If the Top control B is below the bottom of a Can Grow control A, it will
always be below the Can Grow control A.

Thanks, Duane. The sequencing of the controls is not an issue. None of my
controls overlap. My question is: "How to eliminate the extra blank space
that occurs after my chart control and before my second subreport control?"

To push an object below it down the page a growing object need not be placed
directly above the object being pushed. Even though the other objects are to
the right the vertical relationship between them and the subreport on the left
will be maintained when they grow.

Unless you can extend the top of the subreport on the left UP and/or the bottom
of the objects on the right DOWN such that the top of the left hand object is
above the bottom of the right hand objects then you will have to live with the
fact that it will be pushed down the page.

Thanks for your clear and very concise answer. I understand. This looks
like an opportunity for a future version of ACCESS to provide an additional
format parameter for report controls (POSITION: Relative | Fixed). Thanks
again.
