Black screen of death

Can anyone help resolve an issue around running Check for Errors, followed by
a black screen of death?

Running Windows XP on a Dell 8300 desktop. Also, am running Zone Alarm, Ad
Aware, Spyware Blaster and Spybot Search & Destroy.

I conducted Disk Cleanup, delete files (Internet Options), delete cookies
(Internet Options) and checked for defrag, but defrag was ok. I then went to
run Check for Errors, but received a message that it could not be run now,
but can do so at start up. I checked "yes."

Next start up, error checking ran with no errors found. Upon completion, XP
went into start up mode, but then hit the black screen of death before sign
in. I ran error check again with the same results. I've tried rebooting by
selecting F12 at startup and hitting all the different modes, to no avail.

Since I'm not a tech geek, I'm not familiar with all the options under F12,
but a cursory scan, they all looked in order.

Any suggestions on how I can get past the black screen of death?

Thanks!

try this..... turn on your computer, when the bios is downloading hit F8,
is going to open the windows advanced options menu...select the safe mode
with command Prompt, hit enter and later type:

%system root%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

now restore your system before the problems started

if problem persist...You need to answer in what partition are located the
two os,and boot log, and probably you need to uninstall vista
