Black Screen After Windows Log In

Dear All,
My machine seems to have gone slow. The first thing I notice is that at
start-up I get a black screen after logging in. It lasts for about 15 secs
then windows starts up. I know the machine is on a go slow and as the start
up sound is not clear as it used to be and all the programs are running slow.
I have checked for viruses, spyware etc but with no luck. The machine is
1.8ghz with lots of ram and hard drive and good video card and used to run
quickly until recently.
Any help would be much appreciated.
