I am getting a Black Screen, straight after the Windows Logo (with the time
bar across the bottom), when trying to start XP.

I cant even get into Safe Mode it just hangs on loading a system file.

I have run a CHKDSK /R with no joy.

I have recently reinstalled (last week) and updated this HP Laptop with all
latest drivers and updates and it is a new Domain Machine so it has no virii
or spyware.

Could it be boot records or corrupt registry??

How do i know this wont happen agian if i reinstall?

Any Ideas before I wipe it again and reload XP?

Thanks

Mark

you may want to try here ...you should not lose anything but MS updates

Well if you've just wiped your hard drive and the problem is occurring again
this soon then it could be a hardware issue. It could also be a corrupt
driver which is what I would try first. Go online to www.hp.com and download
the latest drivers for the laptop. Then you can Format and reinstall the OS
and install the updated drivers.

However You may have a piece of hardware failing. First test your memory To
test your memory go here and download the test and put it on a cd or floppy
and boot from it and let it test your memory.

Windows Memory Diagnostic

If all this comes back negative and you've already ran a chkdsk on your hard
drive. You can download a diagnostic utility from your hard drives
manufacturers website. In the end you may need to take your machine into a
qualified repair shop to perform the proper tests on the rest of your system.
Good Luck.

Since you mentioned just installing newer versions of drivers, that is
probably the source of your problem. Have you tried booting using the
Windows install CD and using Repair (to perform an in-place upgrade or
repair of the OS)?

Have you tried holding down the Shift key after the POST (to bypass
startup items on Windows boot)?
