Black Background when converting powerpoint objects to a picture

When coverting Powerpoint ojects to a picture format, how do I get rid of the
"black" background that it places in the picture once converted. I'm trying
to covert the pictures with nice shapes stacked behind the whole object from
Powerpoint so that I can place on a webpage for a transition/fade away show.
Maybe there's an alternate way to doing the whole thing, but I'm used to
Powerpoint. I'm using MS 2003.

What kind of objects are you converting, and how are you converting them?

What I do is group shapes together, then place a photo on top of the shapes
with words describing the photo, then group together. I then right click on
the whole grouping and click "save as picture", choosing the jpeg format. No
matter what format I choose, once I try to import the photo into Frontpage,
it leaves a black background behind everything. I appreciate any additional
help.

I think you probably need to be using an image editor to do this.

If you were to just group the stuff together, right-click and choose Save as
Picture and save as a PNG, PPT would maintain the transparency in the saved
image. But IIRC, Front Page doesn't handle PNG transparency.

You're seeing the black areas in the JPGs because JPGs don't handle
transparency.

You might try GIF or TIF, though. With a GIF, the quality coming from a PPT
"save as picture" might not be very good, though. And with a TIF, the file
size might be too large to use comfortably on the web.

So that's why I'd suggest using an image editor. You can save as PNG from
PPT and then convert to something more FrontPage-friendly (like a GIF) in
the image editor so you have more control over the quality of the image.

Besides that, TIF isn't a "web" format. Browsers and that lot aren't likely to
support it the way they do GIF, JPG and generally PNG
