Hi all,

OK, this one is driving me nuts. [I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 on a custom
ASUS P-4 3.0 system.]

When I plug in a USB jump drive, Windows Explorer recognizes the drive
immediately, but then after exactly three seconds, the drive is removed from
the left-pane (drive tree) of Explorer. I've tried this with 3 different
jump drives, they all behave the same.

The weird thing is that the jump drive is being recognized by Windows
itself, just not by Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). For example, I can open
any Office app and when I click File>Open, the jump drive is visible and I
can open files from there. If I go in through My Computer and check Manage
Disks, the jump drive is there. I also checked the Device Manager, and the
USB drive is listed there, no errors. It's just not there in Explorer.

Any assistance to help salvage my sanity would be welcome.

I had a similar problem with a jump drive. Turned out that it was trying to
assign drive E even though drive E was already mapped to my backup Hard
Drive and Drive F was already mapped to my second CD Burner.

I manually assigned the drive letter for my CD burner to K:\ and my Backup
Drive to L:\ which opened up the E and F drive letters and then the jump
drive worked fine and assigned drive letter E.

Hope this helps

I have seen the same thing with USB devices that try to use the G: drive. You
probably need to figure out which drive it is trying to use and reassign the
drives after it.

That's just like my opinion, man........

Use Drive Management in Management Console to do this (right click My
Computer and select manage).

Well, my jump is being assigned to Drive R, which is the next available
drive letter (A through Q are in use). There is no conflict that I can
identify with my R drive. It is assigned to R when use File>Open from within
an app, and also it is assigned to R in the Drive Mgmt in the Console. The
problem is that the R drive doesn't display in Explorer.

Thanks,

Do you have other USB storage devices attached, like card readers,
cameras, etc.? You may need to disconnect and uninstall all USB storage
devices showing in Device manager under Disk Drives and have them
re-detected. Then in Disk Management re-assign/verify drive letters for
them. Even if it is the only USB storage device I would do the same for
the jumpdrive and see if that resolves the issue.

First use I will have usb items that should show as a drive show here as a
regular drive letter and disappear from Explore. They'll show as a
regular drive in MMC. Once manually assigned the drive letter they jump
into the Removable drive tree and then are seen in Explore. Figured it
was just my laptop having hardware snafu but maybe its a Microsoft winXP
thing.

That has basically been my experience but sometimes still not consistent.

My observation is it appears to be a WinXP thing. I haven't seen it in
Win2K that I recall.

Looks like a backup application for USB storage devices. Did you try it?
Does it solve the OP's problem?

Well, this is really weird. I discovered last night that my jump drives are
listed properly using My Computer rather than Windows Explorer. It doesn't
make any sense to me, but I'll just use My Computer and then Explore from
there.
