I'm looking at a problematic laptop for a client. They are
connecting to the internet via a bog-standard 56k dialup.
When connected, email fails to send and attempts to view
webpages result in a dns error.
I've also connected the unit up to our broadband network
and have a similar problem.
If you boot into safe mode with networking, everything
actually works fine.
I have tried using msconfig to remove all startup programs
and non-ms services - made no difference
I upgraded to Service Pack 2 and downloaded all updates -
made no difference
I used a IPFix tool to reset all the host files and
rebuild the tcp/ip protocols and registry entries - no
difference.
I did full virus scans/spyware scans, and used HiJackThis
to ensure a virus-free, tamper-free system - no difference.
Tried a repair install of windows - no difference.
Tried creating a new user profile - no difference.
Tried deleting all temp internet files, resetting all i.e
settings to default. No differece.
The odd thing is, though i.e and outlook express both
refuse to work, if you bring up a command prompt and do
ipconfig's, network address and dns server -has- been
assigned.
Any ideas? The last resort would be a full system wipe and
reinstall, but i'd prefer to not have to do this.
