Hi,

I have searched all over Google and Google Groups for this
problem, but could not find anything other than one unanswered
post. Here it is:

When playing back audio CD-Rs or audio CD-RWs, there are
frequent pauses while playing the song. Occasionally, the audio
will skip, but it's usually just a pause. These pauses are
frequent and extremely annoying.

Notes:

- -Occurs on any operating system - I've had Linux, Win 98SE, and
now DOS on this machine
- -If you skip to another track from the beginning, the skipping
happens more frequently. The later the track, the more the
skipping.
- -I've had problems with overheating with this machine, if that's
relevant, most likely caused by the Pine/NVIDIA TNT2 M64 PCI
video card. However, the disks are not hot when I take them out.
- -The DOS CD caching program CDQUICK doesn't make a difference
- -Can't enable DMA under DOS with the drivers they give me, but
when DMA was enabled using hdparm for Linux, it gave me the same
problems
- -Does not occur when playing regular store-bought CDs - only
burned CDs which work on every other player

I've just ignored this, since with Win 98SE and Linux, I could
just rip the audio to the HD and it would be fine. However, now
with DOS, I can only play audio CDs in the background without it
being really slow. I don't want to change operating systems -
lot of overheating problems with this machine and Linux got
really annoying.

Before I go out and buy a new DVD-ROM or CD-RW (whichever's
cheaper), can anyone suggest something that might be helpful?
I've seen people mention "lens cleaners," but I don't know if
that is what's required in this case.

BTW, the DVD-ROM drive is a Toshiba SD-M1502 and the sound card
is a SB AWE64 (ISA).

TIA,

Sure sounds like a bad drive to me. Seems like you've eliminated
everything else. It's not uncommon for drives that are "borderline
flaky" (slightly misaligned) to have trouble with home burned discs
while handling "regular store bought" CDs without a problem.

There ARE CD lens cleaning kits (many times consisting of a small
brush glued to a disk that supposedly wipes the crap off the lens as
the disc spins the brush by). Never had too much luck with them
though. And if it's an alignments issue, they won't help at all.

Buy a new drive at a place with a good return policy - or borrow one
from a friend for a test.

TIA,

Got the same problem as yours. And not only that. I've burned many hundreds
of video, audio and data CD's/DVD's. Sometimes audio CD start to give
problems only after 30 or 40 minutes (out of track effects), and work fine
again one day later.
With DVD's, sometimes they can't start at all, sometimes they hang after 30
minutes, sometimes (the same) DVD works perfectly (on the same reader). Some
DVD's and audio CD's work perfectly for a few months, then start to have
problems.
I tried different brand CD's / DVD's like Sony, TDK, Imation, Maxell and
Verbatim. Allways the same problem. Tried an HP cd/DVD writer, a Sony
DRU-510 and a LG, all of them on 2 different PC'c under Win 2000 Pro and Win
XP Home. Allways the same. Tried different burning programs like Nero,
DVDit, Ulead, Pinnacle, and others.
There seem to be no rule. Data CD always work perfectly. Audio and video
have randomly problems on "home" readers. Generally it works fine on PC's.
My personal conclusion is that opto magnetic storage is very limited in time
and that there are no valid alignment standards for home and PC
readers/burners, which results in those random reading problems whem
switching from one reader to another.
I find it very frustrating to see those (re)writable opto-magnetic support
replacing all others while they are absolutely unreliable, even in
short-time perspective. Never in history, information storage seems to have
been so much "volatile" for home users.
Finally, I purchased a serie of large external hard disks on which I created
back-ups of all my audio and video files. For the day my CD/DVD's become
unreadable.
To those who will say "I never had those problems", I recommend to check all
their old recordings...
In the meantime let's hope and pray for a new or better technology that
ensures at least 20 years (that's not a lot!) of safe storage !
