Done all the usuals & checked MSKB (at least what I managed to find).
Only known dependent service is running of course (Workstation). Error
1058 (same as event 10005) & its usual text. Know how to troubleshoot
or fix?

Hi lbrty4us,

Give this a try and see if it resolves the problem........

Go to Start>Run key in:
services.msc
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Right-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service and then select
Properties. Click on the Log On tab. In the Hardware Profile field (at the
bottom), if the Service status is Disabled for your Hardware Profile
(probably is Original Configuration), click to highlight the Hardware
Profile in this field, then click on the Enable button and then click on
Apply. Now, click on the General tab and click on Start under Service
Status.

Hi Patti, you are joking, yes? As subject indicates, BITS won't start
& produces a 1058 error. Now, doncha think one knows how to start/stop
a local service in order to have gotten that far<grin>?

No, I am not joking. I have posted that response to the 1058 error on more
than one occasion, both for BITS and AU Service and as such have a copy of
my response "on file" so I need only copy/paste the response. The fact that
my response also includes the manner in which to access the Services console
seems to be bothersome to you, but I try to respond to posts in a manner in
which one who may be doing a Search (one who may not know how to start/stop
a local service) can readily follow the directions.

Kindly take no unintended umbrage at intended humor, Patti, & thx ur
response anyway. FWIW ISTM one must've made it to that point in order
to have attempted to start & thus get the error. Wes has given me a
few registry entries to check in a related thread, suggest we kill this
one to avoid duplicating or wasting your/others' efforts. ;-^) If/when
I find anything new in its successful solution I'll post it.
Rgds,
frank

Any offense taken at attempted humour has been rescinded <g>. However, one
would not necessarily have to make it to that point in order to attempt to
start a service and receive that (or other) error......sometimes the
recipient of the error is attempting to follow instructions which include
starting/stopping a service from the command prompt rather than from within
the console.
And please do return to post the successful solution if/when you find it.

P.S. Did you ensure that the service was enabled for your Hardware Profile,
as per my suggestion?
