i've got Vista Ultimate installed on a 1 partition, 1 volume drive... do i
REALLY have to reinstall Vista after i create the needed 2nd volume for
Bitlocker ???

No. There is a bitlocker prep tool that will shrink your current partition
and create the needed bitlocker partition.
