Biostar M7NCD Question

Hello,

I have a Biostar M7NCD motherboard. I am running a 300 watt power
supply, AMD Athlon 2100+, nVidia GeForce 5200 128meg card, 1 Iogear 2
port USB card. My system runs perfectly, but I am trying to install a
Smart Modular OEM firewire 2 port card. When I insert the card into a
PCI slot and boot the system, the computer starts but the monitor says
no signal or cable disconnect. When I remove the card the system boots
fine. If I remove one of the other PCI cards (Iogear USB card) and put
the firewire card in that slot the same thing happens, no signal or
cable disconnect. I am not thinking about the power supply because if
I remove another card and put the firewire card in that or another
slot the no signal problem happens. I am thinking the firewire card is
no good. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

Any chance of installing it into another computer? That would tell you
something.
P.S. I searched, but I couldn't find this card online very easily.
Got a link to it?

If your 300W PSU doesn't have a fairly high combined 3V+5V
rating, it might be marginal for that system as the M7NCD
uses 5V for CPU derived power.

Even so, that is a side-issue, the amount of power a
firewire card, while not powering anything plugged into it,
is trivial and possibly even less that some of the other
cards you pulled to try that card in their places. It is
not likely a power issue.

Most likely the card is physically inoperable or a rare
incompatibility with your specific motherboard. Just to
steer a little away from this latter possiblity, if you get
another firewire card I'd choose a different make, possibly
even different chipset on it rather than another specimen of
exact same card if at all possible.

Hi,

My chips sit alongside with yours, believing it's either a bad card or
incompatibily issue. For what it's worth I've writing from a M7NCD right now
with a firewire card using a VIA chipset. I'm sorry I can't tell you which
card it is. It's simply listed as VIA OHCI compliant host controller, but it
works fine and I got it from Newegg a couple of years ago.

Thank you for all your help. I bought another card with a Via
chipset.. I tried to find the card that I bought but the vendor is no
longer listing it. I uploaded a picture of the card with serial number
so someone won't make the mistake I did.

Thanks again!

Recieved the new Firewire card today with VIA chipset and it worked
okay. The other card was not very good.

Thanks!
