I want update my bios. I have a k7vm4 motherboard from
ASROCK. and they told me to download a FLash.exe and the
update but when I run the flash from dos it give me this

A:\>FLASH K7VM4_2.40
► Error 18 - Chipset/Flash part isn't available. The
function will be invalid.

What do I do.

You need a W98 boot floppy to which you copy the Flash file
(you will probably need to extract the exe file and copy
those files) to the floppy, then set the BIOS to boot from
the floppy.
Be sure to read the FAQ and be sure your power is reliable
(a UPS is recommended).

.
I need a win 98 boot disk even if i have xp pro

Some posibilities come to mind:
You got just the BIOS flash utility and not the binary file it needs to
read.
The download was corrupted.
Did you follow all instructions including making a bootable DOS diskette
and copy the files to it, boot from the floppy, etc?

.
I dl two files the new bios and the flash.
isnt the bootable disk the flash and the new bios on a
floppy disk. these are the instructions.

Create a bootable system floppy disk.
Download the FLASH.EXE and copy FLASH.EXE to the just
created boot disk in step 1.
Download an updated ASRock BIOS file (WinZip format
with .zip file extension) from the web site, unzip the
BIOS file and save to the disk you created in step 2.
Boot from the disk you created in step 3.
At the "A:\" prompt, type FLASH, hit space bar once, and
type BIOS file name then press <Enter>. For example:
A:\FLASH K7VT2_1.20 <Enter> then you will see a
message "Please wait for BIOS loading ROM".
After 1 minute, you will see the message "Flash ROM
Update Completed - Pass", then you have finished
upgrading the BIOS.
After finishing upgrading the BIOS, please remove the
floppy disk. Restart your system and press <F2> to enter
the BIOS setup utility during boot up.
In Exit menu, please select "Load Default Settings" and
press <Enter> to continue.
Select "Exit Saving Changes" and press <Enter> to exit
the BIOS setup utility.
Now, system is booting up with new BIOS.

You flash the BIOS before the OS boots, you can make a
bootable floppy in XP by putting a blank floppy in the drive
and selecting the option to make a bootable floppy. Then
copy the Flash files to the floppy. You may need to extract
the exe file to the floppy.

Yes, you can't run the flash utility in XP. You must boot into DOS with the
boot floppy, as Jim instructed you to.

Go into help and support. Type in "make a bootable floppy". Make sure you
are on-line when you do this. Read what the knowledge base has to say!

What do I do.

First ask yourself why you want to update the BIOS. If it is just
because there is a new BIOS version available, then stop and forget
it.

If you don't need to upgrade your BIOS to gain some valuable new
functionality you must have to operate, then don't play the russian
roulette you are about to play.

Questions like this indicate you don't know much about what you are
doing. Screw up a BIOS update and you have the following:

1. An expensive repair at a computer shop as they replace the BIOS.
2. An expensive computer doorstop if you can't afford #1 above.

Put a floppy in the drive and open "My Computer". Now, right click on
the floppy and hit format. On format, hit "create a DOS startup disk".

That does a full format and creates a WinME DOS boot floppy.

You need to run your DOS flasher in DOS mode, not just in a DOS box.
It needs to write directly to the flash memory and DOS box programs
are protected from doing this because it might interfere with other
programs.

In Win 95, 98 or ME, you can boot to a DOS prompt or restart into DOS
mode and the flasher should work.

But Win NT/2000/XP has no underlying DOS, only DOS windows.

No, XP does not have any "DOS windows." It does have a command prompt
window that emulates DOS, but it is important to remember that it is
NOT MS-DOS.
