Bios Update for new Hard Drive

On a Thinkpad T20 the original and current HD is 12 GB. I bought a new
40 GB HD as a spare and I find that when installed in the computer the new
HD wouldn't successfully install the recovery disk. The OS will install but
some drivers for the display are missing. In the process the entire HD gets
formatted. In a Hitachi HD test from a bootable floppy the HD indicated a
component failure when an erasure of the entire disk was done. All other
tests say the HD is good, and the HD functions well in an external USB
enclosure. I am wondering if the BIOS of my computer might be the problem?
Could the BIOS affect the bootable Hitachi test? There is an update BIOS
for my computer and I am tempted to use it if it won't make the current 12 G
HD as installed and loaded incompatible in any way. Any suggestions?
