I have an old machine with a celeron. I want to bump it up to p4. My bios
(no updates available) only supports 2.5g 400mhz. Will I have any problems
if I install a 500+ cpu? Consider me a novice. Thank you.

Possibly not. The BIOS would look for the CPUID which it wouldn't
recognise. From this it sets CPU core voltage, memory timings etc.

At best, you can hope to run it at 400MHz FSB ~ 75% of its rated speed.
At worst, it won't run at all.

It's a YMMV I'm afraid.
