BIOD memory timings

Christo

i had the timings of the memory set to the optimal defaults and noticed the
CAS timing was set at 2.5

I have just taken 2 x DDR266 pc2100 cas2.5 modules out and replaced them
with one CAS3 module of ddr333 ram

I have set the timings to expert and left everything the same as in the
optimal default apart from the CAS timing which i have now changed to three

is this advised? I am not really that much of an expert, but i know enough
to know my memory is not cl 2.5 and it was running at that or my board had
it set to run at that, will changing nothing but the CAS timing to 3.0 which
is what my memory is now effect anything at all other than the performance
difference between cl 2.5 and cl3

?? any help greatly appreciated

I don't recall your system config but if you were running at
133MHz (DDR266) memory bus speed then it's possible your
CAS3 DDR333 module was correctly running at CAS2.5 CAS
rating of a module is the CAS it's spec'd for at the spec'd
DDR rate... when the module runs at a lower DDR rate than
that it will (providing the motherboard reads SPD info
correctly and adjusts for it) also drop the CAS timing.

IF your previous problem was memory errors then adjusting
CAS to 3 may help, but it might've done so even with old
memory in it, not necessarily only with the new memory.

Changing it to CAS3 should not effect anything other than
performance, (except of course stability IF that was the
problem), assuming your board has a "bug-free" bios. I have
seen and even have a board with a bios bug where it is more
stable set to CAS2.5 than CAS3, which is backwards but
nevertheless is the case.
