hi to all
i have a serious problem and i hope someone can help

I am a reseller and the problem is with P5gd1 and external usb hard drives.

Sometimes they work, but after 2 or 3 windows restarts, or after unplugging
and replugging i have the following error:

unknown device

same problem with other external usb hard drives and memory pens...

I CHANGED THE BOARD 2 TIMES, THIS IS THE THIRD!!!!!

the only thing I'm thinking of now is changing the m/b and getting another
one, but not Asus.....

the OS is XP Sp2, formatted at least 10 times, i think i tried
everything.... same problem on rear usb ports, case front ports, rear ports
attached on the m/b....

they are recognized a couple of times, then crack! even after a simple
reboot of windows

unknown device

please help me, i'm loosing money and so much time!

thanks

common XP problem been trying to sort mine for weeks but alas NO way. I
don't want to reload XP for it to go again so to save grace I use ExplorerXP
http://www.explorerxp.com/ when I have to download pics off CF cards or use
my memory stick...........it is a good workaround until Windoz is sorted.

Did you try to install the latest BIOS Revision?
I notice that Asus has at least 5 revisions on their support site. 1008
is the most recent. If you have done this, I would look to the settings
within the BIOS. Check over all of the USB settings, and then double
check them.

And have you tried more than one brand of drive? LaCie are usually rock
solid, but I wouldn't touch Maxtor with a 10 mile barge pole (ironically,
however, my new LaCie external uses a Maxtor drive but it's working fine at
the moment, touch wood).

Asus boards, again, are rock solid. In fact, I've never used anything else
(the only other brand I'd give the time of day to would be Gigabyte). Abit
used to be the board of choice, but they've been going steadily downhill for
about the last five years.

Try a Gigabyte board.

"I wouldn't touch Maxtor with a 10 mile barge pole"................ absolute
crap

I run 2 external USB Maxtor's and they are the only mass storage devices my
USBs recognise..............

its a Windows XP problem.........

It is? I run 4 Externals off of a USB Hub (all Maxtor's I might add so I
am with you on that) without a single problem for the last 8 months. I
used 4 cheap ass Bytech USB Enclosures. They only cost me about 30 bucks
a pop, then the cost of the drives. It is how I store the data for the
websites I build, and it is convenient to just unplug the particular
drive, grab my laptop and go.

Try Admin tools\disk management, make sure device has it`s own drive letter.
I built an external drive unit with an Icy box and 200gb MAXTOR drive.
Partitioned and formatted it in winXPsp2, when i restarted the machine, no
drive, `cos I`d forgotten to assign it drive letters. it`s now a beautiful P
& Q. best wishes..J
