Big Problem with workgroup/share and registry????

S

sue.pcposts

I do hope someone can help me with this. It has been on two other
forums and people seem to be drifting away!
I have xp home on host pc. Xp pro on client laptop. Networked. Sharing
same subnet and gateway. DHCP assigned. IP addresses are in order ie .1
and .2 at end.
I have a d-link dsl G604T wirelss router on the pc and a netgear card
in my laptop. Both configured fine. Even got WEP enabled and getting a
connection on both machines. I set up a workgroup with the same name
and enabled file sharing.
Right! Neither pc nor laptop can ping the other. Request timed out X4
in each machine. Node unknown on both machines. The netgear card
suggested I disabled windows configuring the connetion so I did. I want
to share files and folders so I enabled some sharing on each machine
but nothing shows up in relation to that.
When I click on my wireless network connections there is no network to
be seen despite the fact that both are called the same name and are
working. I can see no workgroup on either pc or laptop.I get a lot of
error messages about having to ask administrator and no server found
when I try to see whats on the other machine. I even get it on my host
pc on which i am the administrator!!
In event manager I am getting these two constant errors.
Error 1517 - try to configure the services to run in either local
services or network service account???
Errors 1003/1015 TraceFileName parameter not located in local registry
deafult trace file used and tcp/ip has reached security limit imposed
on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts!!
Someone did try to get me to go into the registry looking for NETBT but
its not there!

I should add I having nothing showing up under wins on both machines .
Do I need to set this up, if so how please? Netbui???

I know this is a long shot but can anyone please help me get this
workgroup to show up and share files/folders please?
Thanks
Malady

Malady,

To start from your last question, NetBEUI is sometimes used as a workaround,
when there are unresolvable TCP/IP problems. I don't think that your problems
are confined to TCP/IP. In your case, you'll need TCP/IP, as NetBEUI utilities
to test connectivity don't exist. The TCP/IP ping utility is essential here.

When you talk about trying to "see" other computers, or a workgroup, you're
talking about the output from the browser. When you talk about pinging, and
getting "request timed out" or "node unknown", you're talking about either
connectivity problems, or name resolution problems. You need to keep each
concept, and process, straight. And until you solve the connectivity, browsing,
and name resolution problems, you're wasting your time worrying about sharing
folders. Read this article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking.html>

Let's look at configuration of both computers first. Provide "browstat status"
and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a start. Read this article, and
linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Right I can't say I fully understand all of it but:
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", in the network items list in Local Area
Connection - Properties.

"NetBIOS Over TCP/IP" Enabled, in TCP/IP Properties - Advanced - WINS.

"TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" service running - Started and Automatic.

"Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" service (for SP2
systems), or "Internet Connection Firewall / Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS)" service (for pre-SP2 systems) running - Started and
Automatic.

All this is right on both machines.
I have downloaded Browstat and ran the Browstat.exe in cmd box but it
doesnt come up with any info much just a lot of options. I am not sure
how to use it. Must read up on it some more. I now have an Incoming
connections (No clients connected) Icon in my network. Its a bit
strange though because theres stuff like call back in there. All the
other things are checking out ok from what I read. I disabled the
browser on laptop and made sure the browser was set to automatic on
host pc. Could you give me some more help please?
thanks
Malady

Malady,

The best way to help you, if you don't fully understand everything, is to get
the browstat and ipconfig outputs here. I can explain from there. Those 2
tools may give us some things to change immediately; if not, we'll run CDiag to
enumerate your symptoms in an organised manner so we can see where the problems
lie. Read about CDiag:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/what-is-cdiag-comprehensive-diagnosis.html>

If you can't quite follow the instructions, I'll make it simpler:
1) Download the browstat program, and copy it to the new folder "C:\Utility".
2) Open a Command Window.
3) Run browstat as: "c:\utility\browstat status >c:\utility\browstat.txt".
4) View browstat output as: "notepad c:\utility\browstat.txt".
5) Copy contents presented and paste into your next post.
6) Run ipconfig as: "ipconfig /all >c:\utility\ipconfig.txt".
7) View ipconfig output as: "notepad c:\utility\ipconfig.txt".
8) Copy contents presented and paste into your next post.

Do steps 1 - 8 on both computers. Post back here with 2 browstat outputs, and 2
ipconfig outputs. Please label all 4 by name of computer, so no guessing.
Describe each computer with operating system name, edition, and service pack
level. Include any other details that might come to mind after you read this
article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html>

These instructions may be painfully long, and excruciatingly detailed, but if
you follow them to the letter, we can diagnose your problem a lot easier.

I managed to get browstat to work ok. The only things that seem to come
out of it are this:
Status for domain "name of my workgroup" on transport >Device\NetBT
Tcp/ip and then a long number!!
Browser is not active on the domain
Master browser name held by My pc name
Master browser is running build 2600

Unable to query browser statistics
List of tansport currently bound to the browser >Device |NetBT Tcp\ip
and the same number as above.
Hope this helps you to help me.
Thanks

Malady,

As I have said before, if you post the complete and unedited content of both
"browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", for both computers, THAT will help us to
help you. Your description, though well meant, doesn't help.

Try again please.

OK, Malady,

What we know so far:
# Both computers have connectivity with the D-Link router, and are getting
settings.
# Both computers are on the same subnet.
# Neither computer shows extra protocols.
# Both computers have acceptable name resolution ("Node Type Unknown").
# One computer shows no evidence of browser access. The other computer browstat
is incomplete.

This is not a complete "browstat status" output:
Status for domain MASTER on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{324BFC82-DAFE-48FB
-A94C-619D3EBC1611}

Please read this article to see what "browstat status" should contain, and how
useful it is:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>

Now please try again, and post a complete browstat for Laptop. Depending upon
its contents, I will recommend different further actions.

Right ..it should have read for the laptop:

Status for domain MASTER on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{324BFC82-DAFE-48FB
-A94C-619D3EBC1611}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

That is all that came up.

OK, check Services, and make sure that Computer Browser service is running on
one and only one computer - on Merlin would make more sense.

Yes browser is started only on Merlin, Laptop it is disabled.
Malady

Well, the reason why you don't see anything in Network Neighborhood is there is
no browser running to provide the contents for you to see. You say the service
is running on Merlin, though browstat shows it NOT running.

Which computer is showing the errors in Event Viewer?

Give us some historical background, please. How long have you observed this
problem? Any changes made just before the problem was observed? How long has
the network been setup this way? When did you acquire each piece of hardware?
Provide as many details as you can.

Well the problem has always been there and I have had a network for
about six months. The d-link router is firewalled. I have had a strange
thing happend a couple of times over the last six months though I dont
know if this is relevant. I have gone to sign onto AOL and dns server
unavailable or unreachable and dns error comes up. Then I find that a
few of my services have changed. The only thing that has put this right
on both occasions was to reset some of the services and reboot my
router. I lost help and support a few months ago too. It is still
listed and enabled in services but I am told its a cleaning program I
used that did this.
Otherwise I really cant tell you much. Is it possible to have a working
connection in the bottom toolbar and see packets are being sent etc and
yet this aol dns thing happens and you cant get on the internet?? Still
it has only happend twice in the last few months but both times it has
come out of the blue.
The d-link was new and so was the netgear adapter.
I have had this error in a grey box come up a couple of times in the
last few days on the laptop:

Generic Host process for Win32 services encountered a problem and
needed to close.

Dont know what that is all about.

if you could offer me any more advice I would be grateful.
Thanks
Malady

Well, based on all that, this sounds like an LSP / Winsock problem.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html>

But what are these services that have changed? Changed in what way? Are all of
these problems being observed on the laptop only? When you observe a problem
with the laptop, can you ever reproduce the problem on the desktop at the same
time?

You could have packets being sent out, but dropped, with an MTU setting problem.

Hi
There is no way to say which are being lost at those times as they are
too numerous. Its just like a total reset is needed so I am afraid I
cant answer which services.
When I boot up my laptop its fine . That message has only ever happened
twice and no nothing changes on the pc when that message pops up. I
have a big feeling this could be user related? I may be totally wrong
in my naivety. Someone tried to give me remote assistance once with a
problem I was having with powerpoint and when I had enabled remote
assistance etc he said "I thought you said you were online"? Apparently
my pc showed up to him that I wasn't on the internet!! Doh!
I really dont know what to try next. Can you tell me for a start what
exactly MUST be automatic in services for pc and laptop for all this to
work? Maybe I have something set to manual when it needs to load up at
boot?
Thanks

I downloaded the program for MTU. I ran it but apart from seeing my
Realtek PCI and my Netgear card I have no idea what to put in the MTU
box! I do know that my MTU settings in my D-link router must be set as
they are to work with AOL. I looked at the properties and configuration
of both and there is nothing to tell me the current MTU settings Should
they both read windows 2000 professional under sytem by the way?

Hope the above helps.
thanks

Have you gone to ground Chuck? Lol!! Can't say as I blame you!

Naw, they just don't have internet cafe at the beach though. ;)

To work on the MTU problem, DrTCP is the tool that you use, and the articles
referenced in my article give instructions on what settings to make. You'll be
changing the value "MaxMTU" or "MTU" which is listed under Adapter Settings.
The best instructions, if you find the DSLR articles less than useful, are found
in any of the articles linked from mine. Check out all 5, and find one which
you're comfortable with.
# Allen Smith: ICS Web-browsing Problem: the Real Solution.
# Annoyances: Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection.
# Microsoft: Connectivity Problems on ICS Clients When You Use a PPPoE
Connection on a Windows XP ICS Host.
# Microsoft: How to Troubleshoot Black Hole Router Issues.
# NetHeaven: Sites With Broken / Working Path MTU Discovery.

Setting MTU is not a science, it's a trial and error art. You have to set it
low enough so your communications with the servers that you are accessing works.
But if you set it too low, your performance will suck. So you try gradually
lower settings, until you find a value that works.

So go back to my article, and read the 5 articles linked there.

Lol! Well whilst its cold and rainy here and the nearest beach is 45
miles away I will have a go. Don't hold your breath though!
Thanks
