i go to user accounts it only gives me my account and i
cant change accounts or rights or add a new one.
Basically Im stuck with my comp in limited rights and
cant go to administrator. everywhere i go it asks me for
administrative rights. Help

Hi,

You need to logon as administrator to change it (what'd you think was going
to happen?). In WinXP Pro, hit ctrl+alt+delete twice at the Welcome screen
to use the older style logon screen. For WinXP Home, you need to enter Safe
mode by restarting and hitting F8 at boot.

Once in Safe mode and logged on as administrator, you can change your user
account settings.

Opps....
All you need to do is boot to safe mode and log into the
administrator account and change it in there. To boot
into safe mode shut off computer. Restart it and when
Manufature splash screen comes up hit F8 button tell you
get to advanced start up. Choose safe mode. Log into the
administrator account. There will only be this account
and the main account YOU created.
Good luck, I hope that helps/

You need to log on to XP using the built-in System Administrator account to
change that account to one with Administrator privileges. Revealing this
default administrator account will depend on which version of XP is
installed.

For XP Pro, when you see the log on screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice to
reveal the System Administrator account. Select this account and press
ENTER.

For XP Home, you will need to go to Safe Mode. Reboot the system and when
the computer first starts to initialize, start pressing the F8 key rapidly
until you see the black screen menu. Select Safe Mode using the Arrow keys
and Press ENTER. You will see the System Administrator account, press ENTER
to log on.

Once you are logged on, go to Control Panel/User Accounts, select the
account you are locked out of and select change the account.

Let me add also that once your back in it is a good idea to create an
account for yourself with Administrator rights. The ain administrator
account is hidden when other accounts are created and this is done for a
reason.
hat account is not meant for everyday use, it is meant as a failsafe in case
something goes wrong and you can't get in with your account.

.When I hit ctrl alt delete it give me my name and to
set a password when i kit ok it just logs in normally it
doesnt go into safemode. i cant log in as administrator
or go to safe mode by hitting f8, it gives me the option
to start in safe mode but i cant scroll up or down.

oops I forgot to say also that you don't need safe mode.
While the Welcome screen is displayed hit CTRL+ALT+DEL twice and this brings
up the ogin dialog box. Type "Administrator" for the name and whatever the
password is if you created one. If oyu didn't create one then it is left
blank by default.

takes me back to windows not safemode

Hi,

Start in normal mode, start/run msconfig, go to the boot.in tab and enable
the /safeboot option (you will need to undo this when finished to restart
normally, so write it down).

Use the built in "administrator" account to change the settings in your
personal account!

As an aside. Home users running windows shouldn't even have to deal with
this. This type of "nonsense" and "tweaks" should have been left out of
the home edition.

Not for XP Home Edition - the only way to login as administrator is in
Safe Mode.

Steve

Everybody keeps saying that. Including the MVP's.
I'll probably catch slack for saying this and there will probably be many
posts teling me I'm wrong but what you say IS NOT true.
I am not speaking out my @ss I actually did it. I logged off to the Welcome
screen and pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL twice and the dialog came up. I am running
XP Home.

Funny, I used to hear from home users in the Win98 groups that griped about
the lack of those features. Guess you just can't please anybody.

I just realized though that maybe it is because I have SP2. I don't remember
that being a feature of SP2 specifically but I could be wrong about that.
I have a box without SP2 I'll have to fire it up and see.
