BIG firewall issues

Greetings, All. I'm reposting due to horrible spelling errors in the topic on
my original post, so nobody yell at me. :-)
I am currently running the apparently defunct Sygate Personal Firewall, and
am looking to replace it, due to the defunctness. Zone Alarm and Kerio seem
to be the front runners from what I read here, but there are already
problems. I have tried Kerio (the Sunbelt version) and it COMPLETELY locks me
off of the internet. BAM, bye-bye web, no matter what changes I make in the
settings. Now a little additional info, relevant or not, I don't know. The PC
in question is our primary machine, connected via DSL. I just today got our
son's PC online, piggybacking on our connection, and installed Kerio. HIS
machine runs fine. So does mine--as soon as I uninstall KPF. I can't just
disable it, it takes a complete uninstall. I also prefer to use Firefox (like
now) and have read a few comments about compatibility issues. SO--any help,
and suggestions for other firewalls (preferably no-cost) will be greatly
appreciated.

Whats wrong with using Zone Alarm? I use it and have NEVER had any issues
with it. And yes, It IS free. At least the lite versioin is free. It stops
anything I don't want it to and works great for program based access blocking
- good if you are using a "copy" of a program that you don't want to access
the manufacturer for whatever reason.

Get a NAT Router and you won't need one of those PFW solutions that
can't really protect you from yourself.

If you get a cheap NAT Router that also provides logs, you can monitor
all inbound and outbound connections in real time and see what your
computer is really doing on the net.
