Beware using Windows Update on Windows 2000!

There's a recent windows update that can cause a major f$%£ up of your
ssytem on Windows 2000. At the weekend the Windows Update automated service
highlighted I had updates ready to install. As usual I just OK'd that,
without checking what they were. When it said I needed to restart PC did
so.

On restarting PC everytime it got past the screen with the starting Windows
2000 progress
bar, the PC would just reboot itself. Tried starting windows 2000 in safe
mode, and using last known good config etc., but it still just rebooted
everytime at same point. Eventually I got it to successfully boot up by
booting up from the Windows 2000 CD and choosing the Repair option. Things
seemed to be OK except I found it needed my Office CD to be inserted when I
tried to run certain office programs, but much worse was I then found that
Outlook Express wouldn't open. It returned error message "Outlook Express
could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded".

After 3 days I eventually got everything repaired and working, but
subsequently made mistake of using Windows Update again to get system fully
patched up-to-date. You guessed it, the same original rebooting on start-up
problem came back, so it looks like I've proved that one of the recent
Windows updates is definitely causing a major bug in Windows 2000! Very
annoying.

Don't know which update it is but saved screenshot of what it had updated
last time before it rebooted, so it's one of those in the picture. I will
not risk using Windows Update again on that PC because of this!

What picture?

Well i've just updated over 100 clients with the latest oatches, IE updates
etc. etc. and no trouble what so ever. Must be your PC.

Then you're one of the lucky ones, a LOT of other people
are having the same problem. sp4 seems to be the
culprit. Constructive advise would be appreciated.

I was reluctant to update with sp4 but I did so directly after a
reformat and reinstall of w2k. I've had no problems so I'm wondering
if sp4 installs more smoothly if there are fewer apps. on the
system...

Constructive advice would be to "save a backup when offered the chance"
during the install.

Well i maybe one of the lucky ones because i have installed win2k with a
slipstreamed RIS install. Also we have vanilla win2k which have had sp4 put
on and have no probs with our sus server.

Hello,

It's not just about SP4. I fell into this black hole
simply trusting the windows update installs.

read my post for the things I've tried. Any ideas please
let me know.

Zero problems after installing SP4 via SUS. I have TONS of apps installed as
well.
