Similar to the Menu Bar and tabs missing from Task Manager. Something
that
is usually done accidentally and then one wonders how to toggle it back to
the way it was.

File and folder names are missing in Thumbnail View.

This is a feature that allows for more thumbnails to be displayed on the
screen at one time.

If the file and folder names are not displayed in a folder that is set for
Thumbnail view. Right click that folder, hold down the Shift key and
click
on Open. The file and folder names should now be displayed.

Conversely, you can right click a folder that is set for Thumbnail view,
hold down the Shift key and click on Open. If the file and folder names
were displayed, they won't be now.

You can also change this with an open folder that is set for Thumbnail
view.
With the folder open, click View and change it to anything, except
Thumbnails. Now, hold down the Shift key, click View and click
Thumbnails.
The file and folder names should now be displayed.

Conversely, with the folder open, click View and change it to anything,
except Thumbnails. Now, hold down the Shift key, click View and click
Thumbnails. File and folder names should not be displayed now.

On my machine in Full Screen view (F11) without Common Tasks or the
Folders
pane showing, I can get six columns and five full rows to display without
the names. I can get six columns and four full rows to display with the
names. That is 30 thumbnails displayed without the names compared to 24
thumbnails displayed with the names. Depending on what you're doing, this
can have its advantages.

[[To turn off filenames, hold down the Shift key when you click to open a
folder in Windows Explorer or when you switch into thumbnail view. This
will
turn of the file names, giving more space for the thumbnails. Doing it
again
turns them back on.]]

But, Ctrl + H still works right?

There are other undocumented things in XP. File and folder names are
missing in Thumbnail View for instance. You learn about them here in
the
newsgroups, because if one person knows something and posts it, sooner
or
later everyone will know it. ;-)

That's what you get for having SP2, Richard.

I have msimn.exe 6.00.2800.1123 and Ctrl + H is right there on the
menu.

Yes it is. It's right there on the View Menu.

this is one trick I NEVER knew....!

Oh this is great! Because I like OE....

can I ask you how you learned of its existance...

and any other references you may have?

The help system has a section called

``Tips and Tricks''

and one of the topics is

``Using Outlook Express keyboard shortcuts.''

However, CTRL+H is not one of the shortcuts that is documented in
this particular topic; either I can't find it, or it has not been
documented anywhere in the help system. It still has interesting
information for an efficient usage of the software, though.
