Beta Hell

I installed VS 2005 Beta 1 on my machine, and then uninstalled it a
while ago. I was never able to reinstall it (it never manages to
reinstall the Framework and just hangs forever in the install process).
So I've read most of the literature on the Beta but not had a chance to
actually do much programming with it. Now I have downloaded VS Web
Developer Beta 2, and once again I can't install it, it again fails to
install the Framework in the same way. Even after a format of the hard
drive and reinstall of all my software, I still get the same problem.
This is driving me mad!!! Has anybody else had this problem??

Cheers,

Beta 2 does have problems if beta 1 hasn't been properly uninstalled, and
unstalling beta 1 isn't very easy.

However, formatting the hard drive certainly should have fixed any such
problems. It did for me.

Therefore I'd have to suspect read problem from the CD/DVD/File that you're
installing from. Bad disk? Bad download? Most likely something like that.

Even after a format of the hard
drive and reinstall of all my software, I still get the same problem.

A format, depending upon the type of format, will either delete all files on
your system, rebuild your FAT and start with a new FAT, possibly mark all
bad sectors on your disk, rebuild your FAT and start with a new FAT, or even
set your entire hard disk to 0s (low-level format).

The reason I say this is, depending upon the type of format you performed,
you may have a bad sector on your disk that has yet to be detected and
marked. It certainly can't be a bad file at any rate.

Like you, I had to format to get Beta 2 to install. After that, it went very
smoothly. The order of installation is important and I gather you shouldn't
try to skip SQL Express.
