I like Windows Explorer but there are a few things lacking. I was wondering
if anybody here can recommend an improvement and why they prefer another
program perhaps. I'd especially like it to be able to adjust the columne
width automatically for the widest name in that column. Sometimes you need
all the width in your display space possible and this would help that
situation. Several years ago I think I used something called Total
Commander which was interesting. Surely there are others.

Press Ctrl + Plus key on the numeric keypad auto-sizes all columns

No... I don't think you are reading what the OP said.

The quality of the reactions from "computerhelpforums" is sub-optimal.
:-))

(you use Firefox as an alternative to Total Commander?)

The Firefox users never miss an opportunity to plug their alternative even
if the discussion is on polystyrene manhole covers. They are almost as bad
as Linux-lovers.

I suppose they just dote on a world of cats with warts.

As you noticed, your thread has been "hijacked" to promote FireFox.
This is totally "bogus" as most "readers" see Explorer therefore they
will recommend Firefox as a replacement to Internet Explorer.

The problem with most Windows, since at least Windows 98, appears that
Microsoft has developed Internet Explorer and decided to link it as
the Windows Explorer. You might not find a better replacement to
Windows Explorer because of this.

You are a moron.

I have owned Total Commander since Win98 days. Worth every penny.

Some people use free FMs. A couple are nearly as good.
Alt.comp.freeware will be happy to point you to them.

Hi Will,

Some misinterpreted "Windows Explorer" and thought you were asking about
Internet Explorer (I don't know how, but I'll give them the benefit of
the doubt).

I use the paid version of PowerDesk. There is a free one that may give
you everything you need:

I like, and recommend that you try, Maxthon. It's free, so give it a
try.

Maxthon is an Internet Browser, last I knew. :-) (and not a replacement
for Windows Explorer) Such would be something like: XYplorer, or
xplorer2, or FreeCommander, EF Commander, or the like.

No, has to be numeric. You can dbl click the column divider in the column
header to autosize one column at a time.

I'd especially like it to be able to adjust the column width automatically
Press Ctrl + Plus key on the numeric keypad auto-sizes all columns

Any way of doing that without the numeric keys? That sounds like a most
useful tip.

Many thanks for all the suggestions! I never imagined there could be such a
selection of file managers. Great stuff from Usenet once again. :)

You're welcome Will. Report back on which one you decide to use.
