Hello, when installing new software what is the best way to close running
applications in XP Media Center?

thanx!

I think that one of windows xp features is the ability to close anything at
anytime without fearing the file crashed. And depending on the software,
like MSOffice, if you loose power in a middle of a document, the document is
preserved and saved. However, the problem of file crashes use to be a
problem a long time ago. I close programs and files abruptly sometimes, and
never had a bad experience with them.

If you need to close something that will otherwise take a long time to close
for you, do a ctrl alt del and close at will and to your hearts content.

Also, check your pagefile/virtual memory. Sometimes if its too small or
cannot automatically increase, you can get poor performance from
softwares.....

Just as an after thought and maybe gain some input from others:

I now remember that one very important file I was working on had crashed and
was unrecoverable. When I was working in a power point presentation, my cat
knocked over my ice water onto my keyboard. And whatever keys shorted at
the time, crashed the file to an unrecoverable state. I tried using several
softwares to locate and recover whatever was possible. Both nothing could
find it. Fortunately, a friend had a backup copy of an earlier version of
the file and sent to me via email.

Sadly, my favorite keyboard and cost 60 bucks a few years ago was no longer
manufactured. Big and heavy and the keys were excellent feel, spring and
clicks - keyboard was diffently designed for us males.

But I am convinced that by pressing a certain key combination somehow where
the q and the tilde keys are, files can be "permanently unrecoverable".

Thank you for responding to my post! Too bad about your keyboard but as you
know these things happen. I just toasted my Archos Gmini XS100 music player
buy shutting it down before it updated the internal library. I had to buy the
new 104 model. Goodbye $175.00! (Includes shipping and such).

I found a utility that will shut running apps down and give you control over
what shuts down and what continues to run.

Thanx again!
