Best version of ZoneAlarm for old PC?

H

History Fan

A relative of mine (PC illiterate) has an old, Windows ME computer. PII
processor at 450Mhz, 384MB of RAM, DSL connection. I would like to install
the free version of ZoneAlarm on her system. However, I have heard the
current version (6.5.731) has a lot of bloatware. At Filehippo.com, I can
download earlier versions of ZoneAlarm. Which one would be best for her
system?

Version 6.1 is the last version with support for Windows98(ME).
(version 6.5 and higher is for WindowsXP only.)

Previous versions can be found:
http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/znalm/zaReleaseHistory.html
(N.B. version 4.5.594)

Older versions can be downloaded from:
http://www.oldapps.com/old_version_download_ZoneAlarm.php

Till last week I used version 4.5.594 for my Windows98se PC.
Version 6.5.731 - 13.385 Kb (WindowsXP only)
Version 6.1.744 - 10.277 Kb (don't use)
Version 5.5.094 - 6.813 Kb
Version 4.5.594 - 4.902 Kb
Version 3.7.211 - 3.669 Kb
Version 2.6.362 - 2.856 Kb

I would suggest version 4.5.594 or older (= smaller).

If you want to installa a firewall (zonealarm free have only firewall
features) try the old "sygate personal firewall"
that is still good (even if with little problems) but unsupported and not
updated because symantec have acquired sygate time ago.

If you need an antirivus I can only suggest avg free edition, just disable
the mail scanner plugin when not checking the emails. If you don't need the
autoprotect features from an antivirus just use clamav(command line
http://www.sosdg.org/clamav-win32/) or clamwin(http://www.clamwin.com/).

As in "Don't use it!" or "I don't use it"?
This is the latest stable version here.

BTW: I also have saved the 4-5-594 version
It's half the size and dead stable.

Maybe I should revert back to 4-5-594 ?

As in "Don't use it!" or "I don't use it"?

Both, I used it shortly and went back to a previous version.
I never liked the 6.1 version on my Windows98se.
It slowed the start of my PC and
some pages of ZA were "lost" (empty screen).

This is the latest stable version here.

I thinks that this differs per user (or PC).
So, if you are happy with 6.1.744, use it.

That would be my advice.
I returned from 6.1.744 to 5.5.594.
Went again to 6.1.744.001.
("why should I have problems with ZA?")

Then I returned to 4.5.594.
And everything worked fine again.

My system seems to "hang" at boot sometimes with 4.5.594
To bad as this version is small and fast....

Could try 5.5.094, but that is much larger, and has introduced a
number of fault (don't remember tabs, all the AV monitor s**t etc),
and it has all the new Zone Alarm Security Center code inside :-(

Here you can find even older versions:
http://www.oldapps.com/old_version_download_ZoneAlarm.php
or
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=zalarm

Maybe you could choose for 3.7 or 2.6?

ZAFree 2.6.362 - 2.856 Kb
ZAFree 3.7.211 - 3.669 Kb
ZAFree 4.5.594 - 4.902 Kb
ZAFree 5.5.094 - 6.813 Kb
(these are versions I have saved on my hard disc.)

Since about a month I have a new PC with WindowsXP,
after my previous PC with Windows98se crashed (hardware).

I could not get ZAFree installed, I have no idea why,
but now I use the Comodo Firewall (without LaunchPad).
To me it's like a combination of ZAFree and Kerio 2.1.5.
I am content with the new firewall.

Did you do a "clean uninstall" before going back to 5.5.094?

Yep. The problem looks like the one with 4.5 but happends all the time
