"best" in any software application. What's "best" for one
person may not be for the next person. Like pornography, the
"best" is in the eye of the beholder. What's best for ME has
no bearing on what you might find is BEST for YOU.
Now, had you asked what some of the better known programs
were ... you'd get a lot of useful answers.

I couldn't agree more. As with any software, different features and
functions will mean different things to different people. To try to add to
the conversation, I will list my favorites (yes plural).
Microsoft Security Essentials - I like it for its ease of use, integration
into the OS, and stability. In my experience, it has a pretty decent
detection rate as well.
Avast Home - Good detection of spyware and viruses, pretty configurable, and
easy interface.
Antivir - Same benefits to me as Avast, but doesn't fair as well with
dectecting spyware (from my experience). I don't care for the ads though.
AVG Free - I have been a long time fan, and in my opinion, they used to be
the leaders in the game. However, over the past couple of years, I feel they
have been slipping a bit. It used to be my primary anitivirus software, but
I feel that their dection rates have fallen off ever since they got into the
all-in-one solution (virus, spyware, malware). It seems to now be a "jack of
all trades, master of none" security suite. They used to be a really good
antivirus, but now it has become just a decent antivirus and spyware
protection app. Same thing I feel what happend to Norton Antivirus.
Of course, all of this is my opinion and it is based on what I have
experienced. I would never "marry" any app and I always keep my eyes open
for new things. Technology chances too much for any one brand to hold the
crown for long.

I used to use AVG but after my machine ended up infected with a coupl
of viruses and trojans I switched to Avast. I've been using Avast fo
the last two years and I haven't had any real problems. It seems to b
very good but you still need to make sure you have a firewall runnin
too.
