Best combination?

My company has charged me with providing voice over narration for PP shows.
Any suggestions out there re. what's the best sound card combined with the
best microphone?

You may already have what you need. What sound card do you have? What mic do

For the record, I have a couple of decent microphones and was unable to get
anything even remotely decent when recording to any of several laptops.

I finally bought a gadget called a Mobile-Pre from M-Audio ... about US$140.
You wouldn't believe the difference it makes, and I've also been able to feed
everything from home stereo line out to pro-quality mics to electric guitar
into it. It all just ... works.

And it's USB powered. One less wallwart. Yowza.
