Best browser for a P166

M

ms

I've seen lots of posts on "best browsers", but the ones I looked at
need at least a 233 MHZ computer.

I use Netscape 4.79 and see occasional screen freezes on some sites. I
then use IE 5.01 and it sometimes has problems.

I do need Java Script capability for some sites.

Advice on a better browser that will run on a P166?

Have you tried an older version of Internet Explorer?

On a P166 I have run the following
IE5.5
Opera 6.04
Mozilla Firebird (all versions)
K-Meleon (all versions)

I would certainly recommend Firebird and K-meleon, although my
preference is opera.

Just installed Moz Firebird on a relative's old P166, 32MB RAM, Win95.
Purrs along nicely.

Absolutely!

You will be well satisfied with Phoenix Browser, Foxmail, and XNews
as your three normal clients.

Thanks to all for the help.

Mozilla Firebird 6.1 (0.6.1) works fine! In fact, it works great!

Version 6.0 would freeze when executed, no real change on my HD, so
something must have changed in 6.1.

So far, I can't import my Netscape 4.79 bookmarks, did not see any
obvious help on this so far, have to find the right Mozilla forum.

Thanks. See my post on Firebird. XNews has worked for me, I like the
GUI, but Netscape Communicator works much easier for me, and having
offline cache, loads quick. I will look at the latest Foxmail. Older
versions had problems. As a mail client, I have always liked Scribe
when not using Netscape. I always use Popcorn to check mail on the
server first.

From memory, when I swapped from NS 4.78 to Firebird on the P166, we
used IE as an intermediary, to grab the NS bookmarks (maybe with a
"sync" utility ??) then let Firebird import from IE.

Right, John. I had found that, it works. The next task is to organize
the resultant file, a mixture of Firebird defaults, IE favorites, and
Netscape bookmarks.

Have you accomplished the latter? Seen any ill effects, if so?

I did this on a Pentium 133 with Win98SE and a K6-2 400 and a 486
DX4-100 with Win98. In all cases, I could use the PC without any
problems.

The only "ill" effects were that certain new (2000+) MS programs (WMP 7,
for example) could not be installed. But those programs would be nearly
unusable on a P-166 after all.

Too bad about that, though, for others. Sorry to hear it's that tied
in.

It should be mentioned that the IE is often only required for
installation. Therefore, if you install the programs before removing the
IE, they might be still usable afterwards. Yet, not in all cases. I can
only say for sure that it did work with WMP 7. AFAIR, it did *not* work
with Word 2000 - I had to reinstall IE on that PC.

Well, Opera (3.5) is in my opinion the fastest browser I ever saw on a
Pentium. But even this it seems to me that ie5 is still faster in some
things and Microsoft depending sites like downloading ie or typing in
the Knowledege Base is not supported on Opera!! Also the new seven
Opera can not do.

After all, the freeware version of Opera is poor because you just have
a half of screen to surf.

Either your math is very poor, or a .75" high[1] ad box takes up half of
your screen. Do you really have a 2" monitor?
